I am replacing building models within a game, that are 2d. The problem I am having is with sizing. The models I am replacing are small, the average being 141px x 122px x 32 Bit Depth. I have created a new model, export it as 2d graphic using the sizing option, the model quality is very bad.
I have tried by using pixel calculator to make the models in a much small size so the pixel size I have quoted above I tried making a model 11.94mm x 10.33 & the image quality once exported is still very bad.
After resizing during the export process:
I use GIMP to add a transparent background & have tried resizing using GIMP, but still image quality is just as bad.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Export at a larger size, then use an image editing program to re-size. It might be good to understand what the final dpi is set for, and adjust accordingly.
I will try again using GIMP to resize. The dpi for the originals is 300, so I will look at that as well. Thanks.
This is one of the original building I am trying to replace.
The original doesn’t have edges or profiles so you might consider turning them off before exporting if you want to preserve the look and feel. If you want to have the lines there, check what different “Line scale multiplier” values do to the look, together with Antialiasing.
Also, the original is apparently using Parallel Projection in an ISO view instead of Perspective.
SketchUp line weight is variable depending on the image resolution. You might want to adjust the style to turn the edges off, or you might need to export at 2,3 5 or 10 times the size need and then size down in GIMP.
I’ll have a play around with that as well. I’ve done many buildings using Sketchup Make 2017 but never to the size required for this game, so bit of a learning curve.
hello,
just an idea but an image that small might bring the need of a ‘stylished’ version of a model. Don’t try putting too much efforts on refining details, think of it as a logo, it has to catch the eye and to be made readable at first sight. There are a few topics about sketchup latest versions icons by the way ; It proves in a way that it is not easy reducing the amount of visual information and remain precise and relevant. I guess this is what you are looking for so try to remain simple which paradoxically isn’t an easy task.
removing profiles or edges is a good suggestion but If you own a vector graphics softsare (such as illustrator, inkscape, affinity designer…), I believe you can have really nice results by editing an exported .PDF, it is quite quick to select every line by width and adjust them / make the outline “glow” and the other disappear… if needed.
you might also want to switch to parallel projection (camera menu) before exporting it looks like an isometric videogame, perspective would give a wrong result
