Problem with Settings>Template on Mac

,

Every time I try to access the Template section of Settings SketchUp stops working. More than that, I get the “beach ball of death”: it never stops rotating and the message I get is that “SketchUp stopped working”. The only way out of that is to force-quit it.

I tried starting SketchUp with no extensions, reinstalled 2026.2, deleted the preferences files. Nothing works. The same problem happens with and without extensions.

Any ideas?

What did you need to do or why do you want to access the Template section within Settings? in 22 years of using SketchUp, I don’t think I’ve ever done anything in there. In fact, I don’t know that there are any settings to change or anything you can do in there.

Correct me if I’m wrong but is it not just showing you a list of available templates?

Hi Eric, this is where you define the template that will be opened when you start a new file.

You can also do that by Save As Template: and then tick the option to use that as your default.

@bmike beat me to it. That’s how I’ve always done it - hence the not knowing/needing the Templates setting. I know that doesn’t address the reason it freezes but it should solve the problem for how to set your templates moving forward.

Yes, I agree with both of you. It is a reasonable workaround. However, SketchUp should not have a setting item that causes a crash and forces one to use workarounds to be able to work.

I had no idea it was a work around. Been doing it like this forever. Never even considered your way.
