On some groups or components when I change the texture it shows changed when I look at Entity Info but still displays the previous texture. Is there a chance I am just using components wrong?
Would really appreciate any guidance,
Dan in SketchUp Go
It would help if you share the .skp file so we can see it.
If you are putting the material on the group, but the previous material was applied to the faces inside the group, the previous material will have priority and the new material won’t show. Entity Info will show the materials applied to the selected entity so it’s entirely possible that Entity Info would show a material different from what you see in the group.
Example: I’ve applied a green color to the selected component.
Thanks so much. That worked great on everything except a diagonal corner cabinet, which I imported from the 3D Warehouse, that I recently added. Cabinet Layout w Diagonal Base Cabinet.skp (3.2 MB)
To be honest, it’s a mess with a ton of unneeded nesting of groups/components. Here’s the front face of the top door rail selected and Outliner in the desktop version. The objects highlighted in blue are the group levels. The topmost one is the cabinet.
Most of the groups in the nest have their own materials as does the face of the rail. To change the material on the rail you need to burrow in all the way to the faces and paint them.
Wow! The model was built primarily to give an Artist Rendition for the client and to double check dimensions to know how the cabinets will fit together. We’re ordering the base cabinets as 42" high, 30" wide, 12 inch deep kitchen cabinets through Home Depot. Bookshelves aren’t standardized like kitchen cabinets are, though, so I will building those in place, on top of a countertop I will build on top of the base cabinets and on top of the foundation. The foundation sticks about 5 1/2 inches out from the upper wall section. I originally built a winder center base cabinet but when the client decided on this diagonal one, I had to pull the original one and stuff this one in, then build the bookshelf on top of that. I hope to be meeting the clients on Monday to sign contracts and get front money. I will then order materials and finish a second story deck for another client while I’m waiting.
Thanks for tearing this cabinet apart to see what all the complications were!
You should not be using SketchUp Free for that. It’s a violation of the EULA for SketchUp Free. You need at least a SketchUp Go subscription but a Pro subscription would be better for you because it would include LayOut for creating documentation to show the client or create other documents related to the project. You would also be able to use the desktop version of SketchUp which would give you access to a variety of extensions and output options.
I mention on the first message that I am using SketchUp Go. I will get the desktop version as soon as I feel I can afford to. I am 76 and lost over $5 million trying to get some of my invention products on the market in the 80’s and 90’s and I have worked for my own businesses 90% of my career, so only social security and not much of that. I have many new invention prototypes working, one simple one is ready to try to license. Hopefully not hand-to-mouth soon.
I am anxious to get the desktop version and start learning Layout soon!
