Power cut whilst saving - Failed to open document

Hi there,

I’m a long-time professional SketchUp user. I had a call scheduled with a client at 12:00 to show progress. At 11:59, I decided to save my work just in case. A few seconds later, there was a power cut.

I phoned the client to explain what had happened, laughing at how lucky I was to have saved the document just before the outage.

Fast forward two hours: the power came back, but the file wouldn’t open. I received the message “Failed to open document.” I can only assume the file was corrupted when the save was interrupted. I’ve already tried changing the Autosave file to SKP with the same result, and I’ve checked the temporary folder, but there’s nothing there.

I’m hoping someone can take a look at my file to see if there’s any chance of recovery

Unfortunately the last third of the file is nothing but zeroes. There’s really nothing that can be done with it.

Were you also saving to your Trimble Connect storage while working on the model? If you were there would be abackup copy there for each time you saved the file.

Thank you Dave! That is very kind of you. Putting on some coffee to redo all the work

Sorry it wasn’t good news. Enjoy the coffee.

As you restart the model make sure you are saving both to the internal drive and to Trimble Connect. Are power failures common where you are or are you just getting stormy weather right now like we are. It might be worth considering a UPS for your computer.

Most file systems have a delayed write cache to reduce the impact of file save on overall performance. It’s possible that the power fail happened before Windows had finished writing the file to disk. Sad accident of timing!

It only happens twice a year. Just very unlucky this time. I’ve started saving to Trimble Connect just in case

I believe that is exactly what happened. Have been using SketchUp solidly since 2010, and this is probably a once in a million situation. A bit like winning the lottery, but the opposite feeling :grimacing:
