How do you orbit to inside a component?
Zoom into it and then use Pan(the hand) and Look around(the eye). The Orbit tool can still be used but it is a bit restrictive inside a component. Using these tools all together you can do it.
In case you are in Parallel view mode you can’t get inside a component, get into Perspective view.
It was the zooming to inside the component that I was missing. Your other tips are very helpful also.
Ironically, this is a situation in which the same clipping behavior that causes so many problems with large models is actually doing something useful!
