It’s time I share a series I made a few years ago, featuring the Remote Utility Tank Robots, or RUT-Ro’s for short (yes, that joke is going exactly where you think it’s going, but not yet). I made a few of these tanks for an Instagram post, complete with a backstory about them being deployed to clean up a nuclear plant in Jersey. I won’t share the full text since I’d like to keep politics (even satire) out of these forums.
The first here is a construction model, done up in a lovely shade of orange and a few go-faster stripes for good measure. The arms are based on a SCARA robot I saw on YouTube built by Yamaha. The overall look of the RUT-Ro’s is primarily from that moon robot in A Grand Day Out. I found the whole tiny eye on a kitchen appliance look really amusing.
The depth of field was a very tedious process involving layers in Procreate. I think it’s a bit much, but also has that kind of diorama/Lomography sort of vibe.
Clean background plate. There’s a snow removal service near me that has these concrete barriers laying about.

check that. it’s using styles and fog to make a depth of field mask. pretty smart.

I’ve been neglecting this gallery despite a backlog of images to post, mostly due to an art block and motivational problems. I’m here today to remedy that. I’ve participated in Inktober for many years, and sometimes I’ve used SketchUp for a few of the prompts. This year I’ve decided I’m only using SketchUp (plus maybe an image editor to add the watermark) Here’s the “Title card” and teaser image for what I’ll be making this year.

While I get ready for Inktober, here’s the rest of the RUT-Ro’s, including the one-off “Springfield Special.” The military version is my favorite; modeling the rail guns was a lot of fun.
I heard
Homer doesn’t choke
Bart anymore, a change that allegedly precedes the
Disney acquisition. I never got around the modeling it, but the access hatch on the back is supposed to be a donut.
