A more efficient method would have been to work in meters, pretending they’re millimeters, then scale by .001 when necessary, or simply scale up and down by multiples of ten in your head on the fly.
Probably time to read up on the Scale tool.

No need to hit Backspace to clear the Measurements box. Just start typing a new value and it will automatically replace the old value.

In a new model make changes to your favorite settings: mm/presicion etc.
In menu File > Save as Template … (here also check the option 'use as default template) > …
Next start of SketchUp uses your saved preferences
