Multiple tag mystery

Seems I need some clarity in tag use, as I’m finding odd behavior of components. I recently discovered the issue, which is multiple tags inadvertently assigned to different faces/lines of a component. Problem: I’m not exactly sure how I’ve accomplished this.

EG: drawing a cabinet. Draft a cabinet side, place it on the sheet goods Tag. Faces disappear as I hide tags. When I hide “Doors” tag, I loose part of a “sheet goods” component’s visibility, as somehow, it’s assigned to “doors”.

As I understand it, one needs to be certain to be on the “untagged” tag when drafting a fresh component. Once drafted and labeled as a component, I then assign the component to the desired Tag. What I’m missing is how I ended up with one face within that component assigned to any tag other than “untagged” as I draft it from scratch. I know it’s me, and it’s easily fixed, but can anyone help me ascertain how I may easily avoid the issue?

Seems I’m missing a key move in monitoring the active tag. How does it change in the background from “untagged” to any random other tag when I’m not looking, and any recommended strategies to avoid this going forward would be appreciated. References to past threads and or targeted training vids is welcome.

No need for videos or tutorials. It’s really simple: never ever change the active tag and all geometry stays ‘Untagged’.

Groups and Components are assigned to tags.

Yeah, I’m well aware of that, and indeed, never change the active tag from Untagged, yet I’ve got odd instances where I see the pencil in the Tag tray is sitting on a completely different tag. That’s what gets me baffled. I also am aware of keeping things clean, well labeled and loose geometry tied up. I CAM using these drawings, so I fuss well past a “good enough” mentality, as materials are not to be wasted.

I’ll have to check out that plugin so I may clean up before I’m hit with any more surprises.

Only other thought is I’m rolling over the tray as I’m scrolling through geometry with the mouse, or indeed, some odd explosion maneuvers, though I only explode groups. Components are set in stone, then either edited or discarded.

I’m keeping my tray on an adjacent screen as a measure to avoid that being the issue going forward.

One last thought - due to the size of this massive house build and the extended time frame from designing to production, I simply scoop a room at a time out of the large model to make “shop” drawings, including layouts, material organization and cut listing operations. Obviously, I’m trying to reduce processing power consumption as well as work more cleanly. Perhaps some tag confusion and or remnants are jumbling a bit in the process.

I appreciate the reminders, insights and suggestions.

Are you using any extensions that might be changing tags / assigning tags / etc.?

No, I run pretty slim on those. Just basic tools, like bezier and CutList Bridge, Dynamic Components and sandbox tools.

Again, I’m thinking I may inadvertently be scrolling /sliding over a wrong window that scrolls a Tag selection without me noticing the hiccup. I just don’t actively change that window in the tool bar at the top of the page, nor consciously change that pencil icon in the Tab tray, as I know this is not recommended. Just an odd hiccup on my part that I wish I could define and adjust my activities to avoid doing so.

I appreciate the opportunity to pick a few brains here and get some useful pointers. Always something new to learn, despite my 18 years Sketching.
