Model is running too slow

I’m working with Sketchup for the web on what I consider to be a small model. I am constantly getting the “page unresponsive” alert and every click of the mouse takes up to a minute to register. Can anyone give me some advice on the basic ways to strip down the model and make it run faster. I have very little knowledge about Sketchup under the hood. Thanks very much in advance..

It would be more useful if you said how many megabytes the file is and how much geometry (edges, faces).

Thanks for the response. Model is 13 MB. Could you please tell me how to find out how much geometry, like edges, faces etc. I can’t figure out how to find that information. Is there a way to select the entire model (including geolocation) and get the totals for edges and faces. Thanks for your help..

If you are still using SketchUp 2022, then you can easily see in

Window > Model Info > Statistics

In the Web version it may not be implemented yet.

By geolocation do you actually mean a terrain that you imported somehow?

I was using Sketchup desktop 2022 but I switched to Sketchup for web. Yes, I imported the terrain for my specific location. I’m on a Mac and I can’t find a way to view Model info.

How big is the terrain you imported? Where is it positioned relative to the origin (0,0,0)? Did you import it from 3D Warehouse?
Did you import other objects? Did you check them before importing them?

Free version or SketchUp Go?

I don’t remember exactly where I got the geolocation from. It’s an aerial photo of the actual property and it is positioned correctly (N S E W) on the grid. I believe it has coordinates (longitude, latitude). It is correctly positioned on the X,Y axes but it is too low on the blue axis, so technically “underground.” How can I get the size of the terrain? If I click on it in the ‘outliner’, it’s a group but there is no size info in ‘Entity Info’. Thanks for your help..

It’s a paid version of Sketchup for the web. I don’t know what “Sketchup Go” is…

That’s the paid version which gives you access to SketchUp Go (web) and SketchUp for iPad.

Please upidate your forum profile.

Can you share the slow SketchUp file so we can see what you are working with? File size alone doesn’t tell everything.

Here is the link to my slow Sketchup file. Let me know if this is how to share a file:

I seem to have lost my Geolocation. It disappeared from the outliner. Do you see the terrain anywhere? Could you please also explain how to update my forum profile? I can’t find my profile..

You need to provide access to the model.

Well, I just got a link to your model which only allows me to look at it in the online viewer. Navigating around your model isn’t slow for me. I do see some extraneous stuff you could probably omit.

Since I can’t actually open the model in SketchUp you’ve got me hamstrung.

Go to the J is the brown circle at the top right of the forum page. Click on it, then the person icon, then Preferences, then Profile. Correct the information and then scroll down and click on the Save button.

Hi DaveR,

Sorry I didn’t do that right. The web version is not very friendly. Could you please let me know how to share my model with you on the community site. Thanks again for your help..

Download / Save the file locally. Drag that file to a reply window. If that file is too bag you’ll need to use a file sharing service to host it. Be sure to provide a public link.

Thanks bmike. Here’s the file saved locally…

Lawn04-06-26.skp (1.3 MB)

DaveR, OK here’s the model saved locally. It’s extremely slow to load. I also seem to have lost the geolocation terrain that was imported. It’s not in the outliner. Any advice?…

Lawn04-06-26.skp (1.3 MB)

It looks like the geolocation terrain was removed. It is not present in your model at all. Accroding to Model Info it still has the geolocation set. You ought to be able to reinsert the terrain if you wish.

I went through your model and did my usual cleanup process. Really the only thing I found was a lot of incorrect tag usage. That shouldn’t affect loading speed.

See if this version of your file loads more rapidly.

Lawn04-06-26 PURGED.skp (1.0 MB)

On a related note, we recently introduced memory management features in SketchUp for Web. You can set warnings when memory usage gets too high, and then take actions like purging unused data or clearing the undo history. This was added to App Settings, and it may also help manage performance.

Yes, thanks a lot. This version is running much faster. One other question- I now have to replace the geolocation (which is a group). When I copy and paste it from an older version, it orients itself to it’s true north but the model isn’t oriented properly. How do I orient your version of the model so that north matches the north of the geolocation? Maybe “paste in place” will work? I can’t find that function in the web version. Do you know where it’s been hidden…
