Lost 280MB project - 'This does not appear to be a SketchUp model' after crash. Any hope?

SketchUp froze during save. File size shows 280MB, but SketchUp throws this error. Backup file isn’t working either. Can anyone check if anything can be recovered?

The file you shared contains nothing but zeroes. There is no recovery possible.

Your profile says you are using SketchUp 2026 with a Pro subscription so you would have unlimited storage on Trimble Connect. Did you save a backup copy there?

thankyou for checking dave.

no, this is on our office machine so we only work locally, no trimble connect.

guess it’s completely gone. is there any way to protect from this in future? autosave didn’t save anything.

You’re welcome.

Make sure you are saving to an internal drive. Save frequently. Keep your models under control so they aren’t larger than absolutely required (less to save so shorter save times). Take advantage of Trimble Connect to save backups of the model periodically. Make sure your computer is kept clean and that there’s plenty of space on the internal drive. If power failures are common, get a UPS so the computer isn’t immediately affected when the electrons stop flowing to the office.

got it, thanks for the tips dave. will keep that in mind.

Does the machine have google drive installed?

no, no google drive or desktop sync on this office pc. saved directly on internal ssd.

Have you checked the “working” folder in sketchup? Sometimes some old unsaved backups can end up there

you mean the temp folder? checked it, nothing there unfortunately. thanks though adam.

The one found here

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\SketchUp\SketchUp 20xx\SketchUp\working\SKETCHUP\RecoveredFiles

Sometimes things can end up there

didn’t get a chance to check the folder since already had to start building the model again from scratch to meet submission. but thanks a lot for sharing this path adam, will definitely keep it in mind if something like this happens next time.
