Locked / Frozen Generating Scene Thumbnails

Technical Problems

  1. Cannot open SketchUp
    1. SU is trying to “Generating Scene Thumbnails, and SU is completely unusable.
  2. Steps I have tried
    1. Force Quit Reboot (No change in behavior)
    2. Open from layout (No Change in behavior)
    3. Click cancel as soon as dialog appears. (No change in behavior)
    4. Check dont generate thumbnails for this model as soon as dialog appears (No change in behavior).
    5. Try to open a simple drawing. (No change in behavior)

I looked at the 10 bugsplats you sent in, and they have been for various reasons. The more recent ones are crashing very early on.

Can you open SketchUp, and sit looking at the welcome screen ok?

It would never get to the

I could not get it to the welcome screen.

  1. I Force Quit again. Tried to open up a known small file.
  2. My result: SU is trying to "Generating Scene Thumbnails again. Always, and I did not mention this in the earlier post, but in the background, I had a blank SU screen in that was open, the tag window, the scene window, and styles window. (This was always the case each time I force quit. I think I force quit 5 times) The scene screen was for a very complex model. Im sure that is what it was trying to open and generate thumbnails.
  3. Also I did give the force quit some time. I think prior to the hour I let it run for about 40-50 minutes.
  4. It was also a heavy workday so, I finally just opened up my other cad programs and started working. Then after about an hour, I got a bug splat. I posted a copy of what I posted here in the bug splat. The dialog then asked me if I wanted to re-open the app, I said yes, and SU opened with the welcome screen. I was a bit shocked.
  5. I am in, and I am working. Happy day!

I thought of something worth knowing.

On Mac, applications will reopen documents you had been working on, and it could be that one of your documents has issues with making scene thumbnails. We have been looking into a problem, where one file we have does do that.

On macOS you can open an application and hold down the shift key. That is supposed to stop the app from reopening previous session documents. If you get stuck again, try doing that.
