If I hi-lite an entity in layout in 2025 the move tool cursor that automatically displays does not have the same point picking ability as when you actually select the move tool from the menu. This muddiness happens when you have overlapping entities, i.e. hatch over linework, dimension leaders at linework etc. and the cursor often changes from the move cursor to the stretch cursor over these common points. If I select the move tool from the menu however, the point picking is precise, no muddiness, no cursor display change. Are their two different versions of the move tool?
I think you’re describing the reason why a separate move / rotate / scale tool was implemented.
especially on small elements, selecting then moving often resulted in accidental scaling or rotating.
so yes, the standalone move tool is globally better. in my opinion. and yours too it seems
Your observation is accurate. If you do not select or invoke the move tool, the cursor acts as it did in previous LO versions. However, if you select the move tool or hit the “m” shortcut, it acts with more precision. This is assumed to be by design to bridge functionality from the previous versions.
Mixing the two ways of moving can be confusing.
Probably should implement a noticeable visual difference in the cursor…a little confusing when two versions of the same tool use an identical cursor display… my thoughts.
I wish we had an option to turn off the old mode.
part of me wants to use the new mode, like it works in SU, but part of me is used to layout the way it has been working for years. muscle memory takes over.
I know what you mean. It impacts the copy function as well.
The old mode you have to hold the modifier, whereas the new mode you tap the modifier. That one took me a while to get used to, but I think I’ve retrained my brain now.
New move tool is a huge leap as far as I am concerned. Have an older Logitech G13 gaming keyboard where my left hand lives, toggle stick on there is setup for move, copy move, rotate, and copy rotate in SketchUp. Now that this functionality has carried over to Layout, everything is super quick, and abundantly more precise…great update in that respect.
Agreed!
