Line tool has a mind of its own LO

In LO 2018 when I draw a 1 pt line to show the 2 x ridge. Then I draw a 2.5 pt line to show the 4 x ridge When they touch at the ends the 1 pt line changes to 2.5? What is going on and how do I stop it from doing this?

Also: I draw a floor plan, then copy it as the framing plan. I save the new scene. (in SU 2018 pro) If I add the lines indicating RRs and CJs to the framing plan, the program adds them to the floor plan where I don’t want them. How do I stop this behavior?

You’re second problem – is that in SketchUp or Layout?

If you are in SketchUp – how are you creating the floor plan?

Is it loose geometry or grouped?

Have you turned your floor plan geometry into a component and then copied it to create the framing plan?

It’s a SU model imported into LO - I had no idea there’s such a thing as auto join. How do I draw 2d in SU? I don’t pull anything up. It’s 2d only. Why am I using SU that way? I don’t want to go up the learning curve on auto cad or some other software, when I know SU sufficiently for my needs (or so I believe) No, it wasn’t grouped, layered or made a component. I find those steps more trouble than they are worth. Trying to edit them is cumbersome at best. I also edit images in Paint or Paint.net and import them. I tried Inkscape several times, such as converting a DWF or PDF but never was happy with the results.

But, why is it updating other scenes? I get your point, if it was a component it would act that way. Unless I accidentally made it a component, I don’t believe it should do that.

Well – unless anyone else can understand the errant lines issue from what you have described, maybe share the file…?

Scenes will show whatever you have drawn. If you draw a box and make a scene, then draw a triangle next to it, then make a new scene you will see the box and the triangle in both scenes.

You really should learn to use groups / components and tags.

Tags would allow you to control visibility of things from scene to scene.

Groups / components would isolate geometry from new things you draw, and would offer much quicker and more efficient drawing.

But, if you think all of this is more trouble than it’s worth (literally a couple of clicks) then ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Unless you embed your Sketchup model inside Layout, you aren’t “importing” the Sketchup file in Layout, you are simply referencing it. This means that all changes you make to your Sketchup file will be reflected in Layout by default upon saving.

To do what you are wanting, you need to use “Scenes” as @bmike pointed out to maintain control over different views of your Sketchup Model. Each Scene you create will by default create a snapshot of the camera orientation (what orientation the model appears on the screen), the style, and the visibility of ‘Groups’, 'Components, and ‘Tags’. Note, this snapshot is of the view settings, not the model geometry, so any edits of your model geometry will be reflected in all your views.

In the Layout App, you will need to make sure you have the correct ‘Scene’ enabled for each viewport (see the Sketchup Model panel).

If you are using Sketchup (not layout) in 2D, and you aren’t using groups or tags to change your visibility, I assume you are panning around to look at different 2D drawings, correct? While this is not the intended way to use Sketchup, it will still work, you just need to make sure that each scene is saved to be zoomed into the part of the 2D drawing you want visible in each Layout Viewport. (There are numerous other ways to accomplish this goal, but this is the simplest workflow to describe).
