I need some help - perhaps anyone on the forum has some insight or tools. I have received a *.lgs point cloud file, which I have not yet been able to open on my MacBook Pro.
Leica doesn’t supply any software (that I am aware of) for a Mac, nor does SU provide any extension available on a Mac either. I tried Cloud Compare but to no avail, and the forum posts referring to Mac Extensions for SU all end with the same conclusion: Trimble doesn’t have these extensions for a Mac.
So my question is: would anyone be able to open this file, and export it to a format that I could open? Or better yet… knows a procedure that does work? Kind of running against walls here Any insight would be appreciated, thanks!
(And if anyone from Trimble reads this: … you know… windows, Mac, same product,… etc. etc. )
Just had a quick search on the internet and apparently LGS is a proprietary Leica file, but I did read that Autodesk Recap can convert it to LAS. If that’s the case, and its not too involved, I would be prepared to create a mesh for you using the SketchUp Undet plugin which you could obviously use. If you are happy to share the file I could try and get it converted as I know plenty of people who use AR. How big is the file? I could send you a OneDrive link to drop it into.
My conclusion so far (taking into account various chats with colleagues and @Kevin58 ) is:
On a macOS one can use 3rd party software like Cloudcompare or Meshlabs to open e57 files. However it seems that at least with cloudcompare there is some limitation with the colors showing;
*.lgs files are Leica proprietary files, which can only be opened by Leica software - their free desktop software is for windows only at the moment
it’s not possible to open pointlcouds in SU on a MacOS because you need a plugin, ScanEssentials or Undet, which are both Windows only (@adam@trimblebot_1@Colin )
Therefore as of now viewing a point cloud is possible, but interacting or modeling with it is not possible without a windows system.
