Layout - issues and questions (was 2025 Pro - latest update: It wasn't broken in the first place so why the need to do this?)

Apologies in advance for this rant, shamefully my only contribution thus far, as generally, you get it right.

I really don’t understand why you feel the need to provide us with an update that changes the way things function when they we’re working perfectly fine, it makes no sense and costs us all time to re-adapt to this, could you please keep anything that would have a muscle memory impact the same?

The same happened a few years back and you reverted to the original setup, i believe that was a duplication function within SKP

Yours sincerely, grumpy old man

Hey Grumpy old man. What was the function that has broken?

Good morning! Thanks for responding, clearly, I have gotten a little frustrated, likely due to workload and not enjoying change under stress.

It was a layout issue, I have three sets of plans I’m working on, and the update caused all the view ports to disappear, that may seem minor to you but after hours of work its pretty concerning. When I reconnected them, right clicking on the viewport to open the larger menu wouldn’t work, nor would it allow me to move the viewport. I did the following (basically turn it all off and on again)

I removed the 2024 version, then opened each SKP in 2025, then the same for Layout, then reconnected the 2025 save of the SKP, after that everything was fine.

I’m just pissed I lost time again due to updates. I’ve not had a chance to navigate all the updates and probably won’t have time be fore annual leave. No doubt there’s some cool features or upgrades in there that I wont rant about.

Yours sincerely, a slightly embarrassed grumpy old man.

Hiya, I do have a couple of notes.

I notice now when producing a PDF it used to automatically open for review, that no longer happens. Minor but it was handy.

Layout; When you zoom in the viewport disappears for a second or two, update or my pants graphics card? Again Minor but jarring

it’s a new option that you can turn on or off. check the preference panel, it’s draft mode.

when you export your pdf, you can tick or untick the option to open the pdf upon complete export. I guess it’s now unticked by default ?

I changed the category and added a more suitable name so people can come have a look. turns out some of your issues might be actual issues / bugs, some like the two I solved are not actual issues, and some might already be resolved.

What did this do to resolve anything?

There is an issue in another thread (and I have experienced it myself with client drawings) that would leave the white viewport / would not update properly.

I think it has to do with older SKP files being used in 2025 with LO, or a weird mix of new LO and old SKP, or both.

For my work I only saw this when updating my templates, but have not seen it since.

For my client who I was teaching at the time - I copy pasted the model into a new 2025 SKP file, reset up the scenes and then setup a new LO template for them.

BUT! Perhaps it is best to remember that you can have multiple installs of SKP on your machine. When a new update comes out you do not have to rush to start using it, and if things are not working so great (for whatever reason) you can always use the older version of the program. It is helpful if you move to the new update on a small project, and I recommend starting it fresh from scratch in the new update, while you keep all critical work in the older version. I’ve done this since 2019, with good success. (Same goes for your operating system updates, other than security patches).

It also helps to keep backups of your work so you can step back if needed. This may save hours and hours of work that you seem to have lost.

I appreciate your looking into these issues, the guidance, but most of all your patience.

Best wishes
