Layout is taking forever to do tasks that used to take seconds

My Layout files seem to have come to a screeching halt as far as performance is concerned. I’ve tried everything so far. I updated my Mac to Tahoe, I’ve purged and cleaned up items in my SkUp file, I’ve gone to settings and made all the recommended changes from other threads, made the necessary changes to Viewport settings, and my images still won’t update. I get the warning explanation point. Earlier today it was taking such a long time. I would do other tasks in my studio while waiting for the update. But now it just doesn’t update at all. Not sure what to do at this point.

Share the LO file so we can see what you’ve got going on. Are you still using SketchUp and LayOut 2024 as your profile indicates? Where are the LO and reference files saved?

Hi Dave, I am using the latest 2026 Layout and SketchUp.

Please correct your forum profile with the current information.

Everything is saved on iCloud. That is the only thing I haven’t changed because it’s worked for me that way for several years without any problems so I can’t see why I can’t keep saving them there.

That can be a huge problem. It’s best, and safest, to keep the files saved locally.

Again, share the LO file so we can give you more guidance.

They are very large files.

I recently had such a problem caused by a very high polygon faucet I happened to include in the project inadvertently. Have you done a simple test set up - a SketchUp file with just one object, say a cube, and imported to a one page Layout file?

Should I create a DropBox link to them? Like I said I have always worked off my iCloud and my files are always huge. It’s just the nature of the type of work I do. This has not been a problem for me in the past so I would assume the latest and greatest software from SketchUp should be working the same as it always has for me, despite working off iCloud or having large files.

I will try this. I did add a new faucet earlier today.

Yes. And send it by PM if you can’t make it public.

Working on files saved directly to the cloud might work but you are dependent on a lot of infrastructure between your computer and the server where the files are being saved. There could be any number of places in that path where there’s a delay.

Posted about it here:

Where do I see the polygon count on an object? I found the faucet to be under 2 MB - there is also a sphere that is suspect but it’s also only 2MB.

I’m going to clean up my model just a bit and then send to you in about 30-40 min. I have to step away from my desk for a bit.

There’s an extension from Sketchucation called Statistics Probe. It will tell you the number of edges from which you can roughly infer the number of polygons.

It would be better if you don’t clean anything up.

Okay. I’ll send in a few minutes.

It took some time to upload to DropBox. I just sent you a link via PM. Thank you Dave.

I’ll look at Statistics Probe in the meantime.

I’ll take a look at your files. That 2.39 Gigabyte file should be slow. That’s obese!

The obese file is when I was working off the SkUp file that had both option 1 & 2 of a 2,500 sqft basement fully decked out. But even after I got rid of all the items from Option 1 I was having the same problem on the smaller files. I think you should ignore the huge file. It’s bonkers.

Where did you get rid of the Option 1 stuff? I did look at the big file. This is part of the references list. Note the length of the scroll bar on the right side.

After purging the unused content out of the file I was left with three references.

It should be no wonder that things would be slow with this file due to all the references Layout needs to keep an eye on and save each time you save or there’s an auto save.

The .skp file is quite large with some excessively poly-heavy objects.

I did my usual cleanup process starting with fixing incorrect tag usage.

I was surprised to see no unused components in the model since that’s a common problem for many users. There are however some excessively large textures. There’s no benefit to having such large textures in the model but it slows things down and bloats the file.

I ran CleanUp3 which reported this:

I’m going to do some additional cleanup and see what I can do to reduce the file size.

BTW, the giant file is actually the backup. Note the ~ in the file name. You need to be very careful with that to ensure you are working on the correct file when opening it. Same applies to the SketchUp files.

Although the other two LO files aren’t nearly as large as your 2.4 Gb file they use the same bloated .skp file so I would expect slow performance especially when saving everything to iCloud.
