Layout Feature Request - Opacity slider for viewports

I don’t know if this has been posted before, I searched and didn’t find it . I need to request the feature of being able to change the opacity of a viewport in layout. We often stack viewports and need to make the lower viewports fade away. This has been a common “complaint” amongst my peers.

Until such time as this feature is added, if it ever is, you can create the same effect by placing a shape (rectangle maybe) on a layer between the two viewports in the stack and then adjusting its opacity to fade out the background. i made this as an example for a student to show the idea. I added a tint to the rectangle to make it easier to see.

Thanks Dave,

This has been our usual move but when we pass it around to others they cant understand why dimensions don’t work on the viewports behind the opaque shape.

Another solution that works is to add a fill with opacity to the viewport in front, but again. it confuses any consultants that use the file when they need to select or reference the background objects.

At the very least, being able to reference viewports through such fills would be a huge change.

I don’t know if the feature will ever be implemented but I wanted to put it out into the ether.

Thank you!

You’ll probably find that the viewport in front will prevent a lot of dimensioning to the viewport in the rear. I don’t often need the masking layer between viewports but I do used stacked viewports frequently. An example: I have stacked viewports here to show the mortise in the lower viewport. With the top viewport visible the Dimension tool will not snap to the corner of the dashed mortise lines. In order to get that 1 in. dimension anchored to the mortise geometry I have to turn off the layer vor the viewport above.

Yes, this is a fine solution but to standardize it amongst consultants and peers is un-intuitive to have to layer and turn off opaque fills. It’s just a UX/quality of life request.

Our intermediate fix is to adjust tags to a lower weight in the viewports we want to fade, this also carries some issues but its working.

I get it and I’m not suggesting it isn’t a good feature request.

The problen with dimensioning when you have stacked viewports is that you still have to turn off the layer for the viewport higher in the stack to get the Dimension tool to anchor to the geometry in the lower viewport.
