Layout 2018 can't export PDF error "There was a problem exporting to this file"

They do know about it so I assume they are working on it. It’s an odd thing. I’ve seen it in files I’ve gotten from others but I’ve never been able to induce it myself. Redrawing the shapes has worked for me but I get it when you have a bunch of them to do. Sorry I don’t have a better option for you.

OK, so tried redrawing the Clipping Shapes, but it makes no difference. In fact I deleted the Clipping Ports and then tried 1 basic rectangle Clipping Mask. With it enabled, it would not Export. When I Removed the Clipping Mask, but left the Rectangle on the page, it worked ok.

The only thing with Printing to PDF is I have noticed it does not show the Sections properly in 3D Views.

Attached are two versions of the same drawing. Notice the difference on the 3D Section. The one ending in TEST was exported from Layout with no Clipping Masks.

I’ve also just noticed that the first post on this thread was in January 2018.

Hi @colin

Any news on this?

Kind regards

Mike

A further update on things I’ve tried;

Double checked the Model for loose Geometry. Found some and deleted it.
Removed Logo from Layout

Made no difference. Only works if I remove Clipping Masks.

Opened on MacBook Pro. No problem

EDIT:

Hi Dave

So, had a brainwave, while getting my tea

I removed the Clipping Mask, adapted the shape that I had used as a Clipping Mask to create a mask at the bottom, filled with White and no outline, to cover up the parts I want to hide. It’s what I used to do when I first started using Sketchup, before I learnt about Clipping Masks.

All Layout Sheets exported ok.

Have you discovered the icon editor and floating toolbars in LayOut?

inspiration:

I’ve edited the Toobars to create new ones, so that I’ve customised the Toolbar Layout to suit my needs, but I didn’t know about Custom Toolbar Button Images! Maybe I’ll have a play with that sometime.

Main thing at the moment is making sure this thing is trustworthy. Seems ok so far… :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:

I find it hilarious how such a basic software can have such a problem and no one (especially the development team) comes up with a concrete solution. It’s ridiculous. Too much text, too much analysis, too much blah blah … no resolution. I am already disregarding using the Layout, it is only delaying the delivery of the projects.

PS:
Blaming windows 10 is a low game, as well as asking users to undo updates. The world doesn’t revolve around SketchUp / Layout!

I had no problem with Layout exporting PDFs with SU14 on my old computer running WinProXP. Then I bought a new computer running Win10 pro and this problem started. Layout will not export anything even a blank page. I found no solution anywhere. So I thought I would buy SU20 Classic and run it on my new machine but the problem is still there. There is something in the Win10 pro environment that is blocking the export from LO. This export function is critical to my workflow and I am really POed

Did you install SketchUp correctly on your Windows 10 machine? That is, by right clicking on the downloaded installer and choosing Run as administrator?

I will say I’ve got SU2015 through 2020 on my Windows 10 machine and have never had a problem exporting PDFs from my own LayOut files. The only times I’ve run into problems exporting from LO is when I’ve gotten files from others that have some bad entity that needs to be removed or replaced. After finding the problem entity and dealing with it, export has gone normally for me. I also see a lot of LO files from other users that are very poorly constructed.

I can’t retrace my steps during install but I tried finding the LO exe file, right clicking and running as administrator. Nothing.
I emailed Sketchup. They at least acknowledge the problem and note that others have the same problem so I know I am not crazy. The say they are working on a permanent fix.
Thanks

You can’t install LayOut separately. If you’ll note, my questions was:

LayOut is installed with SketchUp.

There does seem to be a problem with this export thing for some users but not all of them. While waiting for a fix you could at least try repairing the installation of SketchUp and LayOut to see if that helps. It certainly won’t hurt anything.

Since you are now using SU2020, maybe you could update your profile. It says you are still using 2014.

Hey Michael,

With the release of LayOut 2021.0 we have finally tracked down and fixed the issue with exporting to PDF with clipping masks. Please let us know if this works for you.

Thanks,
Adam

Thank you Adam

I will eventually get round to downloading the new Version. Want to wait to see what bugs there are.

I’m also really interested to see if anything has been done about the performance of Layout, as I don’t see much in the Release Notes for anything other than the PDF Export and new Tags feature.

I do think that Layout has a long, long way to go to catch up with Sketchup;

  1. Performance
  2. Making the operation of the Tools Match Sketchup
  3. Dimensions for Circles and Arcs
  4. Allowing different Page Size and Orientation within 1 document
  5. Table of Contents
  6. More Control over the importing of RTF Documents to allow for columns
  7. Oh, and Performance again

… to name a few.

It does seem that Layout gets neglected.
