I’d say not at all. The Scan Essentials API is pretty limited for now and its documentation is not as visible as Sketchup API. That said, this is a topic that is really interesting. Could you describe a bit more the application of it ? What would be the typical conversion you would do ? ---

I got point cloud from the Trimble X7 and I’m exploring whether it’s possible to convert that data directly into a structured 3D model in SketchUp. Ideally, the model would automatically organize elements into groups such as walls, ceilings, floors, and architectural details. The walls would be categorized into a limited set of thickness types. This workflow is intended for general as-built scan applications. I’m not interested in generating a mesh model, as it’s less practical for my purposes. ---

Scan Essentials do not have all the pieces for this kind of workflow (yet). In the beta version, you can classify the point cloud to get access to walls, ceilings and floors. There are also some tools to help modeling planes but it’s more of a starting point. And again, Claude AI doesnt have access to these functions because they are not easily accessible nor well documented. Everyone starts out wanting feature extraction with this LOD, but its just not there yet. Even the very specialty software that can create break lines from slopes and profiles isn’t going to do this. That being said, I’ll follow it up with a simple question: why? Why do you want to generate as-builts from such an automated workflow? Do you think you could convince an architect or engineer to accept such an output that they would then be basing their work off of it? ---

I feel ya, but I’ll be honest: I’m tired of being the “go-to guy” for everything. All it does is make the inverse relationship between competency and compensation glaringly obvious. My worst personality trait is having a “figure it the fuck out” mentality, my therapist and I are currently working on converting it to a “not my fuckin’ job” one. ---

I was getting rapid fire ‘prompts’ via SMS from a long time client a couple of weeks ago. Their client had my design and was dropping it into an image generator for entry porch ideas. After X# of iterations I signed off ‘MikeGPT’. They have since dialed back their revisions to email nice they sort out with their clients a reasonable direction.
