Insert "invisible" model for measurements only

Hello everyone,

I have quick question. I have a model object that I would like to build a part around. Thus I would like to insert the model into sketchup and draw all around it but without every really interacting with it. Ideally, I could snap measurements to its dimensions, but again, not really merge lines with it interact with it. Is this doable?

Thanks a million,
FB

Make that object a group or component and nothing else will stick to it. It’s the same as other entities you don’t want to stick together and a fundamental part of working in SketchUp.

Along with Dave’s recommendation, if you decide to make the object a group or component, you will be able to LOCK the component object so it can not be moved, edited, etc.

Thanks guys. Making the object a component worked perfectly. Embarrassed I didn’t figure that out myself.

Cheers,

As indicated by Dave, you should spend some time watching some beginner videos.

The most important hints for successful working with SketchUp are:

  • Always use the great inference system while drawing
  • Use a 3 button mouse (and only this) for navigation in the model
  • Create groups and components to separate geometry
