Importing large OBJ-files-best extension?

Hi; I have received scanned data that I`d like to use in Sketchup. The company that performed the scan have sent me to large OBJ-files - one on 4,6GB and one that is 10GB. Can I use Skimp or SimLabs OBJ-importer on these files? Does anyone have experienses with both and can tell me how they compare? I`ll happily pay for the best of them-if they will work.

Depending on what you do with that data in SketchUp, there could be several working options:

  • You can test yourself the Trial versions of those extensions;
  • You can also try using other software, CloudCompare, MeshLab, etc… to create low poly models that you can then import into SketchUp;
  • You can try the Universal Importer extension in SketechUp.

If you have a SketchUp Studio license and receive a point cloud instead of an OBJ, you can use the Scan Essentials extension and work directly on it to create the model.
It depends on what you intend to do with that 3D scan data.

dear Mihai,

Thank you for a quick reply, and several suggestiones!

  • I have limited time for testing-witch one would you recomend for OBJ?
  • Yes-pointcloud in E57 is an option, and I have used the native Scan Essentials for some work. It is a slow prosess, and the pointclouds I get is very large og requiers a lot of work in ColudCompare to be usable.

I’ve only used Skimp and Transmutr, both good for normal objects. It may be different for multi-giga files. Maybe I’ll look for a few gigabytes file to test how it is.

Scan Essentials has been improved and should give good results.

It depends on what kind of scans they are (terrain, buildings, objects, etc…) and what you do with that data once imported (rendering, object creation and modification, etc…).

Thanks!
