Imported model too detailed

Hello,

I’m importing DWG models of moving lights into my Sketchup project. The manufacturers supply these models, but they’re all over the place in terms of complexity. This current light I’m trying to import has no faces (just wireframe) and an absurd amount of detail. With 24 instances, trying to move multiple objects quickly sends Sketchup in the loading wheel of death for a minute or two.

Any recommendations on simplifying this?

MAC_Axiom_Hybrid_Head_Up_3D_DWG.dwg (7.0 MB)

You’re right. Excessively details and it would be extremely tedious at best to simplify it and generate the faces.

Do they supply any other file types? No matter what, don’t import it into your project until you’ve cleaned it up and reduced it.

In a new SU file, you could use the wireframe outline to model to it using primitive shapes and adding just enough detail to satisfy your needs.

If you can get the manufacturer to send you an actual mesh file, you can use MeshLab to reduce the number of faces until you find the right balance between detail and file size.

hello,

Martin light website also supply the .3ds file type for this model.
I imported it and simplfied it a bit with skimp extension.

Here it is :

Axiom hybrid.skp (5.0 MB)

it still is quite big (110k edges, 68 faces) but manageable. If I simplify it more it looks jerky.

you have lighter models in the 3D warehouse for motorized projectors, in case you have not yet searched for them and if you don’t need this specific product (which is by the way discontinued)

Great, that looks doable. Don’t know why I didn’t see that 3ds file, thanks for finding that.

We own a large inventory of that fixture, so unfortunately I do need that specific model.
