If (SU2024) the next update had only one thing new/fixed about it, what would you want?

Sketchup is a 3D software so lines don’t have any hierarchy like on 2D, you can set the line style, width and color on Layout, on version 2022 it was added that feature, it works with the tags on sketchup.

You can do that already, just create all the tags, scenes, and sections on an empty file, then go to file/save as template and every time you open that template you’ll have all the presets you made on the empty file, you can set even more things like the style, the units, assets and more.

Why do you need this feature, it doesn’t make sense to me, you’ll have to edit it anyways, and using the push pull tool takes few seconds I’m sure it’s faster than creating parametric shapes.

What do you mean, you can do that already.
Layout is a 2D software so a 3D mouse doesn’t make much sense on it.

It could also be an Auto naming, where everything that falls into a tag is auto named.

There is a multitag plugin that seems to be very robust. I’d prefer to have a native implementation, but here it is:

[Plugin] Multitag extension for sketchup - Extensions - SketchUp Community

It’s a paid extension

MultiTag Sketchup Extension (zzlab-xs.com)

Good, fast working Layout

Still not really acceptable in my opinion. And creating dimension lines not really a joy…

Thanks for that JQL.

When I queried the extension author on another thread a while back, it wasn’t clear to me if his multi-tagging relied on wrapping an object in a group for each tag.

If that’s how it works then it it’s not like ConDoc’s multi-tagging which does not rely on nested groups but uses attributes instead ( I think ) - something that 3DxJFDis working on:

@francisquitof, I’ll try to better define my issue. First, I have seen forum entries where some Mac users were able to make 3DConnexion devices fully functional in Layout. Your profile shows both MacOS and Windows so I’m curious to know whether you have this working in the Windows environment. On my Windows machines, I haven’t found a way to configure my two 3DConnexion devices (SpaceMouse & CadMouse) to recognize Layout. When I move between SU (or any other app) and LO, 3DxWare maintains the device configuration for the most recently used application when I’m working in LO. Yes, basic mouse functions work, but the radial menus and all other programmable buttons cannot be configured to trigger LO actions.

I understand LO is a 2D environment and I don’t expect to use my 3D devices in the same manner as I do in SU. I’m simply looking for UI efficiency and, for me, this means the ability to program all the buttons and screen controls on the 3DConnexion devices. For example, I make extensive use of the radial menus and macros in Adobe Acrobat, Chrome and other non-3D applications. Doing so increases my productivity.

As an aside, I’m retired now but I worked in tech for most of my career, including a few software companies. To me, Layout looks and feels like it’s built on an older legacy code base. I have no technical basis for this and I haven’t done any digging. Maybe this has been addressed in other threads? If it is an older code base, Trimble may be weighing the cost/benefit decisions around adding features vs doing a complete rewrite. I faced this decision a few times and, sometimes, it took years to allocate resources and budget to finally scrap and replace a functioning software package. In an ideal world, I’d love to see Trimble’s roadmap for LO.

It’s known that Layout has some performance issues, this has been discussed on several threads, I’m not a developer so I don’t know much about it, Trimble like apple keeps very secret their road map so it’s impossible to know what are they doing, the closest to a leak I’ve read is that they’re working already in a migration of API, I don’t know if this could solve all the problems but it could be something good cause OpenGL, the API sketchup and layout are built on, isn’t supported by apple anymore, if you check the versions of OpenGL on your Mac and your windows machine you’ll see that on Mac the version is older than on windows.

Regarding the 3D mouse, I don’t use it on Layout, I haven’t even thought about it, unlike sketchup, on layout it’s not possible to install extensions so the 3D connexion drivers don’t work on it. I don’t know if there’s a way to make it work there, there should be, with Logitech mice you can map buttons for any software.

Yep, that’s the problem. Trimble doesn’t publish an API for Layout so 3DConnexion can’t or won’t write a driver for it. In this 2020 thread, @TheOnlyAaron chimes in on the issue. You make a good point about Logitech mice. I’ve used and programmed them before. I just didn’t want to have two input devices on my desk, one for SU and one for LO.

Decent material editor for mac users.

Hi Paul

When I queried the extension author on another thread a while back, it wasn’t clear to me if his multi-tagging relied on wrapping an object in a group for each tag.

I answered to your question here
Plugin not rely on nested groups for multitagging

surely I can do this by myself, I also have my own template, specifically for architecture, construction, and interior design. And my sketchup template linked to my layout template. But this is for me, only me that have the benefit, I want everyone have those benefit, and teach all user how to work with manageable workflow. It is so boring every version of SketchUp has same templates, at least we should have one new template every release. If we give up this to user, why template section exists from the first place? The main goal is to teach user how to use SketchUp properly based on their subject, and with link to layout (currently there is no template for layout, yet), the usage for layout will be increasing.

SketchUp is not only for me, but for everybody… 3d for everyone, remember?

It’s a toggle. You can turn it on and off. The purpose is to speed up the workflow, for example if you want to create a wall usually there are several steps: line/rectangle, offset, push pull, select, group. With this toggle those steps can be skipped. That is why there is a tool like flip tool, rotate rectangle, various arc tool, the purpose to speed up the workflow. same thing my idea with toggle rectangle<>box and circle<>cylinder which can teach user to have clean modeling since there is always solid object there.

Auto-invisible layer. TURN IT ON BY DEFAULT. It is the one thing that annoys the hell out of me when i add another tag and 15 minutes later i discover all my other scenes have the tag activated. A no brainer.

Auto-invisible layer. TURN IT ON BY DEFAULT

+1, the scene must be always in fixed/frozen state (what objects are displayed on it) until the scene is updated by the user

For the love of our 3D god, please add dark mode in line with other pro software. My eyes are killing me!

If I had another one thing to add, it might be to add the ability to import/export USD files… There seems to be an industry shift towards a unified file format and this might be the one…

Maybe it’s coming for Desktop as the iPad version did get this option.

For years I have been mindlessly optimistic about this, but as you say there are subtle signs we may be getting a dark mode… Upon searching for ipad sketchup dark mode, I have just found out that the 3D Warehouse has a dark mode! Thanks for that!
