I cannot open my file. Every time I try to open it, "failed to open document pops up"

At this point I think you would be best to move on from this file. Start remaking the model. Save it to the internal drive and save backups to Trimble Connect.

It was weird. I can open it in the morning without any issue. Then my boss could not open it. She asked me to open following her steps. After that, I could not open it as well. I usually open it through recent list.

It’s not possible to identify what actually happened to result in the fatal corruption of the file. If you need the model you should just get started redoing it.

Okay, it is understandable. Thank you very much. Which software are you using to recover the corrupted file?

Only proprietary Trimble tool (which as noted, we Sages don’t have) can attempt to repair a damaged file. @DaveR is just looking at the file with a hex editor and seeing it is full of zeros, which would not be true of a repairable file.

@slbaumgartner is correct. I looked at your files with a hex editor. Another way to tell is by compressing the file with a zipping utility. SketchUp files are technically already compressed when saved. Zipping them might result in a file that is 2 or 3 precent smaller. In your case they were compressed by more than 70%. That could only happen if about 70% of the data was zeroes.

Basically you can think of it this way. A storm came through and blew away your house. You can sit around and hope that it magically comes back or get busy rebuilding the house. One is sure to get you a house, the ohter isn’t. Going forward take the precautions I gave you to make sure you at least don’t lose all of the house.

How to save the backup automatically into the Trimble Connect. Good news from our ID department. They have recovered the file of one day before from the server.

That’s good. So at least you didn’t lose everything.

It’s not automatic but you can click on the Save button in the Trimble Connect storage or in the Trimble Connect menu under File.

Tell them also to do a thorough check of your office’s network connections and the server and the shared network drive. Is it a virtual device?
These model file corruptions seem to happen quite frequently, but AFAIK the SketchUp team has still not been able to reproduce the issue. The most frequently appearing common factor according to forum posts is that the user has been saving directly to the cloud, in a cloud-synced folder, USB drive or a network server or anything with the possibility of intermittent connection failures/slowdowns. I don’t think it is impossible to get a failure saving to your internal hard drive, but it seems to be more rare. All this is my impression from reading this forum.

I believe that these errors are actually pretty rare, but with millions of people using SketchUp it is inevitable that they will happen to someone. We get a selection bias about how often they happen because people bring the broken files here for help.

Edit: I’m not making excuses for SketchUp. It troubles me that after so many years the devs don’t know how or why it happens.

Sometimes if you’re saving your file on an external device, like a server, the connection can be lost even for a tenth of a second and your file would get corrupted. I got a corrupted file a long time ago because sketchup crashed while it was saving, fortunately I saved a copy on Trimble connect so I just lost few minutes of work.

Thank you, Anssi. We’ve identified the cause of the issue — it was related to my manager’s laptop. After she attempted to open the file, we were no longer able to access it. Unfortunately, the SketchUp file wasn’t the only one affected.

Thank you, Francisquitof. I spent one extra day to redraw the missing part.

Probably it has some bugs. I have not encountered such issue when I am using other software.

From replies the SketchUp team has posted on the forum in the past, we know that they regard this occurrence as a bug. But the devs who have looked into it have never been able to make it happen for them and have never found the reason it happens to others else they would have fixed it.

A huge chunk of forum posts (20%?) is related to this issue. Phenomenal, I didn’t see nothing similar in any other software.

Hi, I have an extra question. How much is the SketchUp Pro subscription per year? This account was subscribed to by the company, and I wanted to purchase one by myself.

Go to SketchUp.com and look at the pricing there.

Can we look at the file?
