How to properly save a recovered SketchUp file and keep it linked with D5 Render and LayOut?

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with a recovered SketchUp (.skp) file. When I open the recovered file, SketchUp doesn’t allow a normal Save, only Save As.
My concern is keeping the file properly linked with D5 Render and LayOut, so I don’t have to relink or redo everything again.

What is the correct workflow to save a recovered SketchUp file so that:

  • the D5 Render connection remains intact

  • the LayOut file stays linked to the model

  • I avoid re-importing or redoing scenes and references

Any advice or best practice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

If the recovered file is what you want to keep just use Save as … And overwrite the old file using the old file’s name. At least LO should then be looking at the saved file and recognize the embedded copy needs to be updated. Alternatively you can save it as a new filename and then relink the SketchUp reference in LayOut. I would expect D5 Render to follow suit.

+1 for overwriting.

a recovered file is not the exact file you were using. it’s (temporary) located elsewhere, therefore you can’t simply save it as if it was the old file. Hence the “save as” choice.

other than that yeah, you can save with the same name and location.
if you’re afraid of loosing the previous version, rename it and save the recovered one with the original name.

D5, layout, all these apps check the file at a specific location. they don’t care if you changed stuff in the file, they’ll read it, as long as it has the right place and the right name.

My usual workaround (that worked before):
When opening a recovered file, I wait for it to fully load, then click the Exit (X) button. SketchUp asks if I want to save before closing — I click Yes, and it saves the recovered file under the same original name, without forcing Save As.
This has always kept my D5 Render and LayOut links working.

After a power outage, the recovered file now opens in Read-Only mode, so this workaround no longer works. SketchUp always forces Save As.

Main question:
If I use Save As and overwrite the original SketchUp file that was connected to D5 Render:

  • will the D5 connection (scenes, materials, cameras) remain intact?

  • will LayOut stay linked as well?

I have 50+ D5 scenes and a lot of work invested, so I’m hesitant to risk it.
Any confirmation or recommended workflow would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Yes! I thought both @ateliernab and I answered that question. As long as the filename and path are the same as LO and D% Render are looking for, LO and D5 Render will be working from the saved model. As to the scenes, that depends on the file you are saving. If for some reason there are scenes missing from this recovered file, they won’t be shown in viewports in LO etc.

When you open a recovered file you can just hit Ctrl+S and automatically it will open a files window where you had saved your original model, if you choose save it will ask you if you want to overwrite the original file, that’s what I do 99% of the times, it makes no sense to me to have to almost exact files with a difference of minutes of work, that way you also don’t have to worry about Layout, D5 or any other software linked to the sketchup file.
