How to keep layers when exporting from sketchup to illustrator?

Hello !

Everything is in the title… I’m usually exporting my sketcup work to illustrator via .dxf or .dwg file but is it possible to keep my sketchup layers somehow ?

I have used ‘Color By Layer’ with .dxf export in the past.

Layers are kept if you export a 3D model instead of a 2D view. I haven’t tried if Illustarator can understand 3D objects.
John’s trick, if applied to a 2D export, might let you filter the result in Illustrator by colour.
