How to draw a table base similar to this?

Hello all. I love the look of this table and in particular the base. Can anyone shed a little light on how to go about it?

Thanks alot!

Jay

Short of the ribbing, the base looks like a simple Follow Me around a square. Do you need the ribs, too?

Thanks Dave!! That is so much better than how I thought to do it! This is what I did useing a tip you gave me a long time ago. What you just showed me is awesome!! Thank you!!

I was hoping you were going to chime in

Dave, to build out of solid wood would this be done in like 4 pieces?

Jay

Do you only want the base as you’ve shown? It could be made out of four pieces but they’d need to be rather thick and there’d be a lot of waste. I expect the one in the photo is veneered.

Thanks Dave. I think the top portion of the table would be built in 4 pieces and the base in 2 pieces. What are your thoughts? We don’t use a lot of veneers but are using them a little more.

Thanks

Jay

The base in two pieces would be very wasteful. Two pieces for each side of the base would make more sense. How thick is the base at the outer edges? How tall is the base overall?

I was thinking the bottom portion would be these dimensions and the top portion would be 8" wide at bottom then tapered up to like 5" or 6" ? Would want this base to be offered in a single pedestal and then a double pedestal version. Just working on conceptual renders and then to discuss how they would build it. What are your thoughts?

Jay

I guess you could do something like this. Probably with the grain running around the base.

It would have the benefit that you could machine long pieces (a little over 8 feet at least) and then cut the pieces like a picture frame.

If you want the grain to run as it’s shown in your original image you would need to use veneer or you’d wind up with a lot of exposed end grain.

That’s great Dave!!! Thank you So much!!

Hi Dave, I have the square table i wanted for a single pedestal base for a round table, but want to try to create one that will work for a much larger rectangle table similar to the one in the attached picture. I have been trying for hours to get this shape ARGH! Do you have any advice? I wanted it to be 24 inches wide and 42" long. But wanted my pedestal portion to be 12" at the bottom then tapered up to about 8" at the top. I just cannot seem to get this?

Thanks you

Jay

Are you referring to modeling it in SketchUp? Since the width is different on the long side from the short, I would be inclined to model cutter volumes to cut away the upper parts and use Trim from the Solid Tools or better, from Eneroth Solid Tools or Bool Tools2.

Thanks Dave , I think I get it LOL! Will try that.

Thanks

Jay

Obviously I didn’t bother with the curves on the long sides of the radiused corners in my example but you could certainly add those details to the blank for the base before trimming.

Thanks again for taking the time Dave!

Hi Dave, I have been messing around with this base and having a few issues

I understand what you are saying but having some issues doing it. Is there a chance I can send you a file to see what I am trying to do? I have the single base where I need it for now just struggling with this one.

Thank you

Jay

Send me the file in a pm and I’ll see what I can do with it.

Thanks Dave, only if you have time though
