How to create lines between two objects not touching

Hi there,

I’m wondering if there is a way to create the lines between to odd shapes.
I know that i could extrude both shapes out and intersect them, then delete the lines around them, but that is not the look i am trying to achieve

for context, this is a furniture leg for a stool

any help is very appreciated.

you will get the best result if the edge counts for both faces are the same.
