Is there a best practice way of working on another sketchup file/ project hilst I am rendering?
The most obvious anwser I assume is to do the rendering on another computer.
Is there another solution?
What are you using for rendering?
Obviously, splitting the work between two machines would be best.
I am using Vray and am able to continue working in layout without interupting the render but I need to get on with another project/ sketchup file. Im not being productive havig to wait for it!
Open a second SketchUp session for the next project. You can work on that project while Vray renders the other one.

Use Chaos Cloud. Cheaper and more future proof than building a dedicated top of the line rendering setup. I do tests locally, send everything else to the cloud. I download a report, send the bill to clients, and I keep working and billing on other things.
