How to build canopy out of solid triangular sections

I am trying do a drawing for a wood working project which is a small octagonal box with a sloping top. Other than being unable to accurately model it in SketchUp, my main problem is calculating the angle for the sides of each section so that it fits flat on top of the box. I would be happy to submit a drawing of the elements I have been playing with, but I don’t see how to do that.

When I need to do this sort of thing I start with section and a path (octagonal in this case) and use Follow Me. It’s simple enough to extract the faces for one section then. As far as measuring the bevel angle set up perpendiculars to the direction of the bevel and measure those. I used Angular Dimension2 to show the angle in the screen shot.

Thanks. I’ll try this. I have rarely used Follow Me, but in this case it seems to be the solution.

I created a canopy with Follow Me and separated two sections but I don’t understand how to measure the angle.

You can measure the angle with the Protractor tool. You might find it easier to lay a copy of the group down flat on the ground plane and align the edge to on axis as I show here. As I mentioned previously I used Angular Dimensions 2 to add the dimension so it’s easily visible in the video but you can just measure the angle with the Protractor tool and note what it tells you in the Measurements Window.

Thanks again. Turns out my incompetence in SketchUp is even more basic than I had feared. How do you know you have rotated the section so that it is flat on the ground plane?

Watch for the on axis indication.

I still can’t make this work. I think maybe I am not using FollowMe properly, Your initial example showed a section that clearly had a beveled edge. Whenever I extract a section it appears to me to have a 90 degree edge. I am thoroughly confused. I am uploading a project so maybe you can tell me what I am doing wrong.
