I’ve seen other people do this, but I don’t seem to know how. For example, just typing @ and a screen name doesn’t seem to do it.

Are there instructions somewhere for how the forum itself works?

@RTCool, seems to work for me. What I do is type @ and then a list of users in the thread pops up, then I just select from the list.
If you do type the full name, it should still work, make sure not to leave a space after the @.

The Discourse developers themselves thought that a forum user guide was unnecessary, and that the best way to learn to use Discourse forums was via trial and error.

Everyone who creates a Discourse forum account receives a PM with a list of Tips etc …

> [@Discourse Tips for New Forum Members \[Wiki\]](https://forums.sketchup.com/t/discourse-tips-for-new-forum-members-wiki/44052):
>
> Every new member gets a private message titled “Welcome to SketchUp Community!”, that has a page full of explanations for doing all the basic things in the Discourse engined forums. If your PM list has become very long (after awhile) … you can find it via this search link: [forum search: “in:private Welcome to SketchUp Community”](https://forums.sketchup.com/search?q=in%3Aprivate%20welcome%20to%20sketchup%20community) Also a very similar public announcement thread:

The “adminbase” (people who use Discourse to run there own forum sites,) kept asking for a User Guide, so one of them started a community project. It was announced over on the Discourse Meta (likely a GitHub project.)

- [https://meta.discourse.org/search?q=user%20guide](https://meta.discourse.org/search?q=user%20guide) _… finds …_

Discourse also has a "learning bot named @discobot …

I currently know how to do the following things:

`@discobot start new user`

> Starts one of the following interactive narratives: new user, advanced user.

`@discobot roll 2d6`

> 🎲 3, 6

`@discobot quote`

Just in case any readers are wondering, you can interact privately with **discobot** from a PM thread, just put (_at symbol_) **discobot** as the recipient, and send it a message (as shown above.)

Hmm, maybe that’s the key: only users in the thread? Not just users in the forum? Doesn’t work with a new thread?

You need to get the name right, then you should be able to get anyone.
Lets see if I can conjure @DaveR when he wakes up.

Yep, I got “in the thread” pop up to work, and that result copies and pastes to a new thread OK.

You don’t get any notification from tagging yourself ☹ .
