How do I delete all these layout backup files

Layout is creating tons of backup files. When I try to delete them, my system hangs.
Anybody know what is going on here?

Don’t know why your system is hanging, but you can go to Edit>Preferences>Backup to stop creating the backups.

Also, I was able to delete the files thru the layout interface.
