How best to work for Architects if you're not an Architect?

I’ve been modeling for a furniture shop the last few years and looking to broaden my skills to become employable in a less niche environment. I live in a rural area, so outside of remote work the only other businesses I’m seeing are architectural/interior design firms. I figure a crash course in Revit would help, what else might I consider beefing up to get a foot in the door? Thanks!

How is your SketchUp knowledge? Assuming you are asking on this forum because you model with SketchUp. Can you manage complex files, can you produce decent looking images and drawings quickly? Good images sell projects, and turning them around quickly is a plus. This can mean via photo realistic rendering like Vray but it’s also important to be able to produce more abstract drawings for earlier stages of creation as communication tools, line drawings and watercolor images for example, images with style. A portfolio or website of distinctive images with a cohesive design vocabulary go a long way toward proving what you can do, especially if you can do it fast.
