Can anyone tell me why the perspective is so skewed, and how to fix it?

Make the field of view narrower.
Select the Zoom tool and type a smaller angle of view. Look at the Measurements window.

Alternatively, you can also type a number followed by mm (for millimetres) to obtain the field of view corresponding to an equivalent photographic lens.
