yeah, I did a smidge of simple cleanup, no retopology, remodelling, just Skimp at 40%, cleanup and material resizer, and just like that, we go from almost 4mb to 1.5

Thing is, words have vague meaning. what is optimised ? Mihai’s file is optimised… in comparison to the original. but the original is optimised in comparison to a raw import.
it’s all matter of perspective, of what you see as optimised.
Long time users tend to have a lower threshold for optimisation than other, that’s all.
Normally, using a simplify tool like Skimp is good for organic models, for others, a quad retopologization is better, but both methods depend on the needs.
When 'SketchUp for everyone' was released and models could be added to Google Earth, there were probably only a few tutorials on how to use the program, and one of them was about how to create models optimized for GE. The example given was a parking lot in the US, with some round pillars visible, and the advice was clear - use a circle with three segments and then PushPull to represent those pillars.
I downloaded a free sample sofa out of curiosity. Short answer: not at all.
Long answer:
Bad pivot placement (not a tragedy by itself, but a clear hint of amateurish modeling knowledge).
Crazy high number of polygons for this kind of “quality”. Lot of unnecessary loops in flat areas could be easily removed leading to dramatic reduction of vertex count.
Amateurish segment-balancing on curves (why the small curve has a freakin’huge number of segments while the big curve is kinda TombRider 1 stuff?), not to mention the unnecessary loops on the flat part (no optimization after committing the amateur level sub-d job).
The plant itself should have alpha channel rather than tons of geometry wich doesn’t make any sense for this level of “quality”.
Special mention for the unsubdivided and poorly mapped ngon with hole.
All in all.. if this was the average model done by the average Sketchup user (usually an architect with no particular knowledge of proper asset modeling) or if it was the tipycal 3d Warehouse Hobbist-level giveaway, I would be more “generous” in my review, maybe 5,5 out of 10.
But for a “professional grade” paid asset repository, this is a poor modeling level, not to mention the general “optimization”. This is a 3 out of 10 for me.
The website itself looks like AI generated slop and the “Menu” tab acts really weird.
Please notice that this review is based on this specific model, maybe the other paid asset are better… BUT what’s the point of showcasing bad models as a “sample”? I don’t know.
Another (important) thing: usually this kind of repository gives you the ability to preview stuff like wireframe, UV layout/texures, material count, closeup views and such, so you know what level of quality vs optimization you are buying. Here you are rolling dice and crossing your fingers.

If you create pipe models, cylindrical objects, tic-tac shapes or beveled objects, and you make them for presentation in LayOut, you can change the default number of segments for Circles (24) to 6 or Arcs (12) to 2-3, they will look ok and you will have a much lighter model.
And then, if you need details for rendering or 3D printing, use SUbD on those lowpoly parts.
Thanks! It looks like it’s actually not that hard to do it. Can you also show how to add objects on the surface of that mobius shape? I want shapes/triangles on a stick poking out of the surface with different heights as well. Something like this image below.
