Help needed > Can't export layout file to PDF format!

You’re quite welcome. It’s especially important to clean up yur SketchUp files before going to LayOut when they get as large as some of yours are and also when you have some many SketchUp model references. It would also be a good idea to purge unused stuff from the LayOut file.

Oh you can purge as well things in layout ? this I did not know ? How can I do that ?

Yes. Go to Document Setup>Preferences and click the Purge button. Before you do, stretch the References window vertically so you can see all of the references in the list.

OK I see… How can I know what to select ?

red is missing.

blue is old, need to be updated.

if you want to purge unused, there is a “purger” button bottom right. it’ll automatically remove all that needs to be removed.

OK so if click on “purger” it just removes what is unused. So this is safe.
Then I can manually remove other things in red or blue ?
Am I understanding correctly ?

What @ateliernab wrote.

This is safe. It only removes references that aren’t used on any pages.

If you find the content associated with those other references and delete the content from the pages in the documnet you can purge again and remove them as well.

OK thank you ! I will try to purge both my SKP file & Layout file and hopefully my pdf file will come out easily  Many many thx and I keep you posted !!

Hey @DaveR - looks like you swooped in to save this guy. Any chance you’ve got tips for me too? Having the same issue. Model isn’t very bulky, as it’s in early development. Created a Layout File to present design options to client. Just a 6-page layout file, but when triggering an export, it gets immediately stuck! So here I am, waving the white flag for help, at eleventh hour. ::eek::

Hi Marta,

Send me a PM with your LayOut and SketchUp files and I’ll see what I can do.

Turn off Output Override.

Out of curiosity, did you try what @Anssi suggested? It’s in Document Setup>Rendering.

Will try now. Every time LO gets stuck, I have to force quit and all that jazz…

Also - files are too big to attach. ::sigh::

Upload them to DropBox or We Transfer and share the link.

Gentlemen! @DaveR , @Anssi -
Your advice was WINNING!!! We have a PDF!!! Thank you!
I’ve noodled with Document Set Up before, but never that command! What’s the scoop behind that feature and when to keep it on versus turning it off?

Again, thank you. You truly saved the day!

It allows you to leave the viewports rendered as Raster while working in the LO file but then before export, it will render them as Hybrid or Vector depending on which you’ve selected. Basically it defers the rendering until right before export. This is handy if you need to go back and forth between the SketchUp model and LayOut a lot because rendering as Raster is much faster than Vector or Hybrid.

If you get acceptable results with Raster rendered viewports, leave that Output Override tickbox empty. If you need the vector or hybrid output, you can either manually change the rendering type for each viewport or you can let it be done automatically at the end with the box ticked. If you choose that option just plan to go do something else for a little bit. Go walk the dog or have lunch.

It may be that you want to leave some viewports rendered as Raster while others are Vector or Hybrid. In that case you definitely want to manual set the viewports for the desired render method and untick that box.

Helpful! Will keep this description handy for future use.
Again thank you both!
I’m off to issue the freshly exported drawings to our clients!
