Guide to adding levels to a 2D plan(for a beginner)

Hi I’m quite new to Sketchup, shifting my design practice from hand drawn to design software, using Sketchup Pro.

Struggling with ChatGPT to develop a 2D plan drawing in Sketchup, into a model with contours/level changes that once created I can take cross-sections off.

Any help would be greatly welcome/direct me to a page where I can get easy step by step guide would be perfect.

Many thanks.

According to your forum profile you are using SU2025. I suggest updating latest version ( you can download it from here: Download the latest version of SketchUp 3D modeling software | SketchUp )

In this version you can ask for help in more specific Sketchup AI Assistant, see here how: AI Help | SketchUp Help

DWG…?

Hi Paul, sorry not sure what DWG is?

That’s great, I’ve downloaded the 26 version and the AI assist-getting closer to what I need now, many thanks.

it’s a file format primarly used by autocad and similar 2D CAD programs. it’s a file that contains vector data like vector plans. it imports quite well in sketchup because you get the lines (instead of drawing ontop of an image)

Based on my understanding of what you’ve said…

I’m in the UK – say I was to develop a scheme on a site that was not level, I might purchase an Ordnance Survey DWG of the site with contour data.

I haven’t done it for a while and more experienced users might chime in – I’d then import the DWG into SketchUp and position the contours accordingly along the z-axis.

Then I would use Sandbox tools to create a surface from the contours.
