Groups are dumb, yet outliner sees '2 groups in model'

Hi there,

I’m trying to wrap my head around the following.
When you create a group, and you copy this group, outliner tells ‘2 in model’.

I understand this about components, but why do groups know there copies, and for what reason?

All the best from the Netherlands!

Groups only become unique when edited.

Combined with plugins, this behaviour can have advantages, for example with thomthom’s selection toys, you are able to convert identical groups to components, by right clicking on one of them > group copies > convert to components, after having selected all instances in the same sub-menu.

As Box points out, as soon as you edit one of them, it becomes uninstanced (which I always thought is a pitty, cause it does even if you don’t modify anything. They should get uninstanced if you modify something, not just double click and exit)

No, I only have back to 2017 on this pc but it is the same there. 2 In model until either one is opened to edit.

It’s like a bag of crisps. You have 10 of them in the store. The moment you open one you have 9 + 1 that is different, even if you close it back up right away.

I use components for 90% or more of my work.

oh wow, I like good metaphors, and that is a good metaphor.

Bags of crisps. File cabinets full of documents. Pushing a heavy stone on ice. Making everything out of paper bags. Pushing a shape through itself.
