Geodome greenhouse with hydroponic towers

When the ceiling fan is running, you sometimes get the feeling that the time has come…

hey, you are still young!

The tomatoes quickly became too big for the hydroponic towers, so I planted some of them directly in soil using the inserts. They filled the holes nicely with their roots…

My son’s chilli harvest is also quite impressive, hot times ahead! :face_with_peeking_eye:

For the dark season, I have now installed LED lighting that will illuminate the dome at appropriate times…

next he’ll tell us he “installed a sound system so he can play some mozart to the tomatoes”

but we all know Cotti is a raver. He is just making his own rave party bubble.

Orange lightening and some add-ons could produce a Jack-o-Lantern, but Halloween season isn’t so big in Germany and jack-o-lanterns are not part of Fasching.

I didn’t have time to add the eyes, mouth, etc., but at least the colour has been changed for Halloween as suggested…

First snow on the dome, I don’t think the snow load will be a problem at any point…

Will it alternately blink green and red for Christmas?

For the sake of the neighbourhood, I have decided to change the colour on a daily basis at most and not to activate flashing.

*— dad, can we have the vegas sphere ? *

— we already have a sphere at home.

the sphere at home :

I see a disco ball in your future!

Hi @Cotty, I don’t know what country you are, but how did your greenhouse handle the summer, were you able to control the heat?

I want to build a greenhouse myself and I’m trying to decide what shape it should have. I’m leaning toward a simple design with a double-slope roof, so it’s easier to cover it with a shade tent during the hot summer days. But I’m also very tempted to build a dome-shaped one.

Could you tell me the disadvantages of this type of greenhouse? Would you build it the same way again, or what would you change?

Thank you.

Hi Max,
My greenhouse is located roughly in the middle of Germany.
The maximum temperature recorded by the logger was 43 °C, but only briefly and on one occasion. I have two windows in the upper section that open automatically when it gets hot, and we often turned on the fan when the weather was sunny (the electricity came from a PV system), so temperature was never really a problem.
The longer you spend looking at geodesic domes, the more fascinating they become. If you have the time, I would always choose this shape over a straight greenhouse (better climate, more spacious, more stable in windy conditions, more attractive to look at, etc.).
What I underestimated was how much condensation formed in autumn. I fear that my untreated wood will only last a few years; treating the wood against moisture would certainly be something I would do differently next time.

Oil the wood you can access it will hold up! Lind seed, tunge oil it doesnt matter.

Since the shape I chose is a 7/12 ‘sphere’, the lower boards are sloped outwards and the water collects on the outer side, but that’s where the foil is and I have no chance of achieving that afterwards.

Maybe you could drill some holes in the corners, so the water can get out..

Not that I haven’t drawn enough domes already, but the construction is so much fun that I repeat it every now and then just for fun as a little finger exercise.
