Gaussian Splat - 'blurry' rendering after re-opening in Sketchup

A very interesting and useful feature for re-design and presentation/visualization of existing design together with new design.

Problem discovered.

When re-opening a Sketchup model saved with attached SPLAT file the SPLAT rendering become very blurry. The first time SPLAT file is attached to the model the rendering quality is very good.

First time attaching SPLAT file

After saving and re-opened Sketchup file it is blurry.

First time loading below

After saving and re-opening, blurry.

Has someone seen this happening and is it a fix available?

Workaround
The only way to get the render quality back seems to be to re-attach the SPLAT file. It will fix the rendering quality for the new attaced file ( the original is still blurry and can be deleted), but if the SPLAT file has been re-orientated (moved/rotated) the re-attaced SPLAT model will be attaced in it’s original location and orientation. Then the move/rotate operation must be done again which can be time consuming.
Next time you are opening the model the same thing is happening and you have to do the re-attacing again to fix the render problem.
In the long run the workaround will not work so a fix to the problem is dersired as soon as possible.

Hi,
I also tested similar workflow and I could not reproduce exactly this but I had other issues.
There is a new version currently on testing that get rids of the sklat format and uses links instead. It should solve this issue but it wont be released until a few weeks.
In the meantime, could you try this workflow:

  • open your original GS file
  • move it / rotate it as you did
  • export it to ply
  • Open a new fresh session with the newly created ply

Best,
YS

Haven’t worked with those splat files, so i’m just thinking out loud…

Would it help if you import the splat into a ‘reference sketchup file’ you import in your ‘work sketchup file’? Or will the ‘reference sketchup file’ also become blurry after importing?

Was thinking, this way you can rotate, move, scale the ‘reference sketchup file’ containing the splat inside your ‘work sketchup file’. And if you need to re-load the splat, you can do it inside the ‘reference sketchup file’, reload it in the ‘work sketchup file’, saving you the hassle to move, rotate and scale the splat?

Hi,
I have tested your worflow proposal. Unfortunately It does not make any difference. The SPLAT’s quality are reduced(still blurry) and even the move/rotate is not maintaned correctly. I exported from Skechup to an new PLY file and opened it in Supersplat to test it there. Supersplat is now also showing the file with the same blurry effect. Concusion is that Sketchup is corrupting the PLY file when saving.

Thanks for testing the workflow. I’ll see what I can do to release the new version as soon as possible.
Just to know, did you use the align with sketchup axes feature ?
Also what was your original GS format ? splat ? ply ? something else ?

Hi,

  • I did not use the align with Sketchup axes feature.
  • the original GS file format was ply.
