Flip Object - 2026 Version

The 2018 Sketchup version allowed us to click an object then right click the mouse button to flip it.

The 2026 version took that away and my work flow is less efficient. Why did you do this Dev? The color planes do not help nor work as they are supposed to (i.e. duplicating object as it is being flipped).

The default Metal Material library is worse than the 2018 version. I just purchased the 2026 Pro version and not pleased with some of the changes so far.

You also changed “Layers” to “Tag” smh. Why? It was fine as “Layers”.

The new Flip command is definitely not more efficient for me. For ex. Click an object, access the Flip menu, press control to active the “Copy” function, click and drag the red color plane some random distance (because you can’t specify a value) and a copied version of the object with green and blue color-planes is replicated at some distance away from the original object. Clicking on any color plane of the duplicated object and the red-color plane is relocated to the new object. This is confusion and requires many more moves to adjust the object to be in the exact location that I need it to be.

At least give us an option to use the old flip command.

The new metal material is missing the items I normally use: Aluminum, stainless steel, brush/polished stainless steel and a few more. These items were replaced with things I don’t need. Yes, I have material libraries that I can load into the model but why not keep the old materials and add the new ones to expand the default library?

The shortcut key for Flip requires 3 keyboard options: one for blue axis, one for green, and one for red. smh.

If you like the new version of the Flip command, good for you. So far, it’s not efficient for me compared to the 2018 version. I haven’t explored other changes yet to see what setbacks/inefficiencies the 2026 version might cause.

Maybe it will take time for me to get used to the 2026 functions but it’s just frustrating at the moment trying to complete a project deadline and have to figure out these new features. I’ve decided to upgrade from the 2018 to 2026 version in order to use blocks/components created in newer sketchup versions. I’m pretty sure Dev can make the newer blocks/components compatible with earlier versions if they wanted to.

For the first object in your demo, I would copy the object, move it to the left, then right mouse click and choose flip along red axis. Move the copied object to the desire location. Fewer steps and less confusing than rotating the color axis as you showed. If it works for you fine but I don’t like the new system and should not be restricted to it. What are you a salesman? Give us both options. Too much to ask?

Although the menu items are gone, the old Flip features still work. You can go into preferences, shortcuts, and set shortcuts for the three flip options. I set Flip Blue to be shift-up arrow, Flip Green to be shift-left arrow, and Flip Red to be shift-right arrow. It works very nicely.

Nothing is preventing me from copying materials from my library into the new 2026 models. It’s just annoying to experience the latest software that is (in some aspects so far) worse than the previous.

Thank you for confirming that the old flip system still works nicely. I agree, it does.

As you might realize, it’s the triggering of the functions that works nicely. The new flip tool does have some extra abilities, but if you are only doing the original kind of flips, then it’s nice that you can still do it the old way, to make it be only one action to get the flip.

If it’s not the red plane then it’s one of the other color axis. I really have to model it to know for sure.

A member of the Sketchup team just confirmed that the old flip method still works nicely. If he still use the old method, it means I’m not alone. Good day. I have project deadline to complete instead of debating with you. smh.

Restricting as in: I can no longer right mouse click on the object then choose flip along a certain access. I don’t want to use shortcut keys or the newer system (for now). I might have to in the future tho.

Yes, we can set shortcut keys but that doesn’t mean the old (right mouse click option) is still there. Bro, you’re annoying. Go away.

“I set Flip Blue to be shift-up arrow, Flip Green to be shift-left arrow, and Flip Red to be shift-right arrow. It works very nicely.”

If he doesn’t use it, how would he know that it works nicely? He might use the new system more than the old but that’s not the point. I’m so used to the right mouse click function and it works very well. Taking it away was IMO unnecessary.

Didn’t know about the plugins allowing older version of Sketchup to use models/components created in newer version. What are some plugin names and does it work well?

It’s impossible to please everyone, personally I never used the flip along feature, I used the scale tool if I wanted to flip something, just scaled from the center and typed -1, the new tool is way better and lets you do copies just by hitting option or Ctrl.

Bro, you’re updating across 8 years of software development and are surprised there are a few changes? Have you compared an 8year old car to a current year model, how about the whole world, feel different than 8 years ago? Software changes faster than most things so you have missed a lot. For the most part SketchUp is actually pretty good about maintaining legacy workflows. But yeah, a few things have improved, different language different more powerful tools and way more powerful under the hood, faster strong better. I’m no fan boy, I have not loved every change at first, but wild horses could not drag me back to SketchUp 18. Have some faith that things are changing generally for the better, the long arc bends toward improvement, give the new stuff a try, you might improve too. Or don’t, your choice, but the rest of the world is moving on.

Imagine this method is taken away and you have to resort to a different method that you don’t like. That’s my point.

The right mouse click method works very well but more efficient than the shortcut keys because I don’t have to take my hand off the mouse then look at the keyboard to press the directional arrow buttons.

It should not have been removed since the keyboard shortcut key (the old flip method) is still an alternative option to the 2026 flip method.

There could be more powerful features in the latest version but I might not need it for my work. The 2018 version was more than sufficient for my studio design projects. I just can’t use models/components or extensions/plugins created in newer versions of sketchup so I needed to upgrade my software.

I’m all for positive changes that significantly increases efficiency and convenience. What I have experienced so far is a decrease of efficiency and convenience. I don’t dislike Sketchup, been using it for many years. I’m just frustrated with some of the Developer’s decisions.

If a system works fine, don’t fix it. Fix the things that needs to be fixed like orbiting when you’re inside an object group. One wrong turn and the camera zooms 50 to 100 feet away than you have to mouse scroll your way back to the object. This issue still hasn’t bee fixed since 2018 but hey, lets change the UI appearance to make it look different. smh.

Smh ? Sydney Morning Herald ?

Summary of this thread:

IMG_8537

So you have NO point, because flip along has NOT been taken away..
Software changes, get over it.

Smh = Sydney Morning Herald ? frustration in a nutshell

@AngeloMaximus, the “new” ‘Mirror’ tool lets you mirror with hand on mouse and eye on screen:

  • mirror about local rgb planes (and if needed dragged into place), with or without copy function
  • mirror about system’s RGB planes (and if needed dragged into place), with or without copy function
  • mirror about any referenced face that you hover over (and if needed dragged into place) and click on (magenta), with or without copy function

The old mirror function is like riding a balance bike on the freeway.

You missed the point. The right-mouse-click option to flip and object has been removed from the menu. A tool that I use often has been removed and now my work flow has been disrupted. Strive for clarity and understanding instead of spewing foolish remarks.
