Filling in overlapping arcs

Hi everyone -

Long time lurker, first time poster here!

I’m slowly developing my Sketchup skills and combining this with my love of the outdoors - I’m trying to draw / design a tent!

I’ve got rectangular base and two arcs that cross over at the apex. I’m now trying to fill in the spaces all around this (to essentially make the flysheet of the tent) but I can’t work out how to achieve this.

I tried with a single arc and then push/pull, but this doesn’t give me the design I wanted.

Here’s a screenshot of what I’ve got so far - if there’s a better way to go about this, then please let me know - any and all help appreciated!!!

PS - I’m doing this in the web version (I have Ubuntu at present)

I’m eventually trying to draw something like this:

With the free web version you can stitch between the vertices on the arcs you’ve drawn using the Line tool to create the faces.

You could also draw the end and side elevations, extruded them through each other, selected the faces and used Intersect Faces>With Selection and finally deleted what isn’t the tent. this would be faster than stitching with the Line tool.

So I think I’ve only got one final problem to solve. The long edge looks fine. However on the narrow edge, the arc appears to bulge out, making the suggestion you had above not work out - is there any way I can solve this?

My rectangle base is 1450 x 2900 mm with the apex of the arc being at 1300mm

Hopefully the picture shows the issue - shout if not!

Draw the small arc first and make sure it’s not quite a half circle. Then draw the wider arc to the same height.

Is there a way I can do that with the smaller circle while still getting it to be 1300mm in radius?

High school geometer. Since the base is length is smaller that 2600, the arc has to bulge out beyond the base. I expect you need to draw two arcs that meet at the center. Here I’ve used the Pie Tool just to make it easier to see what’s going on.

Of course you would then erase the excess geometry.

I presume since you are using the free web version, this is a hobby thing for you. If you were using SketchUp 2024 for desktop, there are easier ways, with extensions to get the surfaces.

Next job is trying to work out how to get a pole sleeve to follow the curve of that edge… :slight_smile:

Good. For the sleeves, I would copy the ridge curves out of the group, draw the profile of the sleeve at one end and use Follow Me to extrude it.

For another possibility that doesn’t produce the exact same geometry, click in sequence on the scenes tabs of this SU file for ideas.

How do I copy the curves out of the group please? If I try to select one, it only selects a small part of the curve. Can I do this in bulk, do I need to multi select all the little bits, or is there a better way to do this please?

Thanks - this was a really good explanation and the file really helped.

Select the edges in the curve, right click on the selection. Choose Weld Edges.

Presuming you’ve already made a component or group of the tent, after welding the edges, right click on the curve and choose Copy at the top. Get out of Edit mode and right click. Choose Paste in Place from the top of the Context menu.
