I was near completion of my kitchen cabinet rendering for my clients when, as I was resizing a sink that I just downloaded from the 3D Warehouse, the program kicked me out. I figured it was no big deal because I consistently save (in my Google Drive) as I make progress. However, every time I clicked to open the file, I received the error message “failed to open document”.
I have seen the other posts where the suggested fix is to change the file from “.skb" to “.skp”, but my file is already .skp.
I have also read posts that say this can happen when saving the file in the cloud versus on the hard drive (which I was doing). I have also read posts that say this can happen when downloading a corrupted item from the 3D Warehouse, which I am thinking I also may have done.
I really need help so I don’t have to rebuild this entire kitchen cabinet setup, especially because this was due Monday evening!
The .skb is the backup file. It should be in the same folder as your .skp
If you find it, you can rename it to .skp and try to open it..
Yes, lots of people come here with files that are beyond repair because of that reason..
Work on your files from your harddrive an save copies to the cloud if you wish to.
I have tried renaming it from .skp to .skb and that didn’t work. I know going forward tosave to my hard drive while I’m working but need help with the current situation.
I upload the project only after they’ve been completed. I’ve been trying to attach the link to my drive using my phone, which isn’t giving me an option for permissions. I’ll try using my laptop in the morning. Thank you!
good news! as I was trying to attach the file to this post, I saw an option to open the link in a new window, which actually opened the file! I instantly saved it to my desktop and continued working. Thank you all!
All edges and faces should be untagged. Only groups and components should be given tags. In the model you shared 22,377 edges and 9,502 faces have been given tags.
By default, any new raw geometry you create has the ‘Untagged’ tag. Before assigning tags, make sure you understand the process of . Your models will be much more predictable if you refrain from assigning tags to entities like edges or faces, or changing the active tag. (Unless you are an experienced modeler, don’t use the pencil icon in the Tags panel)…
The main problem, which was even more of an issue when tags were called layers, is that assigning something to raw geometry might make you think that it is then isolated from other things.
I was very familiar with a few Adobe applications when I first used SketchUp, and so did think that layers in SketchUp would work the same way. If two bits of geometry that are tagged differently are moved so they overlap, they merge, even if one of them was hidden at the time. If you then move the second tagged geometry again, it will drag bits of the first tagged geometry with it.
Keeping all raw geometry as Untagged would hopefully leave you realizing the parts might interfere with each other.
