Exporting into DWG but keep getting not responding

Hi. I usually make my models and then export them to CAD to do my elevations and such, but my SketchUp keeps immediately going to (not responding) when i go to export this model. Is there any recommendations of things in my model i should be looking for that might be blocking this export? It is one of the biggest models I’ve made so it might just be taking longer but it just seems weird that its going straight to not responding for over 20 mins. Also I’m using sketchup2024, should i try to open it in a newer version of SketchUp could that possibly speed things up?

Why are you using SketchUp 2024? Since you have an EDU license you could be using SketchUp 2026.

The Not Responding message indicates SketchUp is busy and won’t respond to further input from you until it is complete. Many times the cause of this during CAD exports is that the model has a huge number of edges. You could probably simplify the model (share it so we can see what you’ve got) or better, set up scenes for your elevations and then use those scenes for viewports in LayOut. Render the viewports as Vector or Hybrid before exporting to DWG.

Thanks for our reply! honestly just what ive been used to and havent updated. i havent tried using the layout features before on sketchup usally it just export straight to dwg but ill play around with that thanks. It wont let me upload my model as the file is too large.. I think your right it might be the amount of edges.

Upload it to DropBox or Google Drive and share the link.

You need to make the file accessible.

A file with millions of edges and faces may take even overnight to export.

More than 82.5 million edges will definitely take a lot of time to export.

The model needs serious cleaning and a diet but even without that, using LayOut as I described would be much faster for export.

Okk will do thank you so much for taking time to check it out!

You’re welcome.

FWIW, I’m going through my standard process of cleaning up the model. Not finished yet but I see a lot of incorrect tag usage and a lot of file bloat due to hoarding unused objects.

There’ll surely be more to clean up, too.

ah yes i haven’t really been taught how to make layers/tags in SketchUp yet that’s definitely something that would help with this, thanks for pointing that out.
