aye… I am totally in earnest here…and not a complete knuckhead. Tried the semi-colon…but it did the same thing.
Is the Mac set up for Spanish as the language, too?
Does the caret show in the window after you begin to type the numbers?
No the caret has never shown up in the Measurements box.
My physical keyboard is a Spanish ISO but I type in english or spanish from it. The Mac language system preferences setting is English as the primary.
That may be the problem. On the English keyboard the caret is above the 6 and on the Spanish keyboard it’s to the right of the P. The combination of English and Spanish may be the problem. Do you have access to an English keyboard you could try?

Yes, I switched to the English Keyboard and used
Shift 6 to get the caret
Works perfectly.
The prob was that I had a mix of languages on the keyboard that I toggle through ( between Spanish, Spanish ISO, French and English) and was not using the proper entry for the proper keyboard setting. Simple yes - (so I suppose i was a bit of a knuckhead 
) but got it now.
So grateful for having someone to assist!
