Hi, i just had the same error from an old file i worked on a couple of years ago and now its not working if anyone can help me recover the file or even let me know how to recover it would be greatly appreciated sadly this was a while ago so i dont have any skb files to recover
this is the wetransfer link for the file any help would be greatly appreciated
About half of the data in the file is missing. I don’t think it can be recovered. Have you tried the backup (.skp) file? Were you saving directly to a cloud location?
Hi, i tried to find the backup but sadly this file was last worked on like 3 or 4 years ago and i couldnt find any. No it wasnt being saved to a cloud location. thank you for trying though
You have sent in various bugsplats, a couple of which relate to an issue that can happen 28 days after you last signed in.
Can you try opening each version of SketchUp you have, and sign in and out? Start with the oldest version. When you get to SketchUp 2025, after signing out, sign in again, and then see if files open ok.
Hello,
I’m encountering the same issue when trying to open one of my SketchUp files. I’m using SketchUp Pro 2018, and each time I attempt to open the file, I receive this error message:
“Format de fichier inattendu.”
(Unexpected file format)
The file is missing a lot of data. It’s missing in little chunks scattered throughout the file. Nearly half the file is trash. Looks like nothing to recover.
Where were you saving the file while working on it? Are you using a cr acked version of SketchUp 2018? Do you have the .skb backup copy? Can you rename it to .skp and open that?
No. It’s not zero but it’s missing too much data to be a viable SketchUp file. No point wasting more time on it now. If you need the model you’ll have to start over.
Hi, hello, can anyone help me with this? One of my co-worker’s file suddenly crashed and when she reopened it, it says “Unexpected file format”, we’ve tried using the skb file and using recovery, but it was the same, we’ve also tried opening it in various different sketchup versions from our other co-workers (2024, 2022, sketchup web and iPad), and still it can’t be opened. Please, if you can help us. Here’s the link to the file:
There’s a lot of missing data in the file. Is your co-worker using a cr acked version of SketchUp? Where have they been saving the file while working on it?
No, I don’t believe so, we both use a genuine install of Sketchup 2020 with a subscription. However, the file has changed hands many, many times including with a couple people outside the company, so I can’t say whether they use an official version or not.
The file is saved on the company server. We work directly in the server for other people to access. We’ve been preparing this one to be rendered with Vray.
If the file really is unrecoverable, then I guess we have no option but to do it all over again. We’ll try to be more careful next time. Thank you for your attention.
This is a common thing when users come to the forum with files corrupted as yours are.
I think that’s the option you have not. Going forward, download the file from the server to the internal drive on the computer before working on it. Once you have a successful save at the end of the session, copy it to the servier if you need to.
Why are you still using SketchUp 2020 with your subscription? It would be wise to update to the latest version to get bug fixes, some of which reduce the chances of corrupted files. You should also be saving your files to Trimble Connect as a backup. There is unlimited storage on Trimble Connect included with your subscription.
We still mostly use Sketchup 2020 because it’s sort of the company’s decision since a few of our co workers still use a classic license for their Sketchup 2020, the company only uses subscription for newer PC & employees if they ran out of classic licenses. As for me and my co workers, our Vray licenses doesn’t support newer Sketchup version and we need to wait for the company to upgrade.
Thank you for the advice, we’ll try to be more careful next time around.
Might be worth having the company look into Studio subscriptions which include Vray. They should look into getting everyone up to date with currently supported version of SketchUp.
