Error: Unexpected file format - unable to open file

I’m trying to open a Sketchup file that was delivered to me but it gives me the “Unexpected file format” error. In explorer I can see a preview of the file. The .skb file is out of my reach as we don’t have acces to the computer of the person who made the model.

The .skp file can be download trough this link (WeTransfer): Unique Download Link | WeTransfer

I hope there’s somebody that knows how to resolve this problem.

The file is, as far as I understand, more than half empty (filled with zeros). Were you saving it directly to the cloud?

The file came from some other computer.

The person who made the file was working local on his computer. We are unable to acces the computer he was working on. Is it possible to recover the file? I see the preview of the model in windows explorer so I hoped the file could be saved.

It looks pretty grim for that file. It’s about 62% zeroes. Nothing to recover.

SketchUp can read and display the screenshot image of the model but that’s about all that’s there.

Ok, thank you. Seems like the only solution is to try and get a back-up file from the original creator.

That or remake the model from scratch. Good luck.

BTW, your forum profile says you are using SketchUp for Schools. That’s a web based version for young school children. If that’s the version you and the original creator are using, there won’t be a backup file. But there might still be a viable version in their storage location.

I have a scholar licence, not for the web-based version. I use Sketchup 2024 on the desktop

So then it would be SketchUp Pro, not SketchUp for Schools.
