This got me thinking about how ridiculously simple a tool can be. We often think of tools as factory made stuff we pay for in the hardware store but a tool can be anything you use to make a task easier (or even possible). Often making something custom can be useful, even if you are nowhere near competing with professional tool makers. The same applies in SketchUp. You can get a surprising amount of work done by some simple scripting.

More toolmaking. This simple jig, 3 rectangles and 6 circles on a sheet of MDF, allows for the perfect alignment of this flimsy card. Stacked in two layers with glue in between, the railing becomes surprisingly rigid (still a bit flimsy but not as much as I expected)

First train over the bridge :locomotive::locomotive::partying_face::partying_face:

(For the record the tracks aren’t glued in yet but just laying loosely)

Long time no post! I’ve gotten up the book case and mounted most of the bridge in the display configuration. For operation, it’ll need a wider space that also fits the balloon loops, but it’s not really a problem as it’s primarily intended as an exhibition layout and not home layout.

Also got some trucks and cars populating the highway on the upper deck. It’s starting to look and feel like the real thing!

Now I only need to lay the track, sort out the gaps between modules, wiring, electric connectors, bridge cables, signage (both for cars and ships), streetlights and all the other things, and then it’s done!

Btw, the white Volvo is the car my dad had when I was a kid. Lots of good memories going to museums, nature, friends of the family, and even Legoland with that car!

…and the ubiquitous white Volvo wagon. Just like we rented in 2006 from the “Canoe King” - no canoes, just the cars because they were such a good deal. One had a manual choke as I recall.

And one more Nordic speciality: You don’t wear shoes inside. I understand it is the same in Japan.

I don’t know many people that do wear shoes inside and I’m in the UK. It’s always shoes off by the front door. Maybe I’m in a minority, but I didn’t know it was even a thing.
