I can’t wait until you do a resin top to the cabinets that looks like the sea.

I’ve already decided against water and will write about why in the next article :smiling_face_with_tear:. It would lock the boats in place and make it harder to move things around to create new little scenes, unless I exclude any waves created by the boats. Also it would create a sharp edge around the model whereas the current approach allows the bridge to blend into the space and be read almost as an art piece.

In the process of photographic for the fifth and final article about the bridge in Modelljärnvägsmagasinet.

Four boats tilting at four different angles. With a digital model there’s basically no extra work to cut at slightly different planes and it allows for so much more life in the scene.

After I had taken a bunch of photos I got my custom designed decals that I had kinda given up on so I had to retake them :sweat_smile:

Also painted some figures. These are tiny! About 8 mm tall. But this model demands a recreation of the the ending of the Bridge (2011).

Also had to take part of the bridge apart for that shot :tired_face:

And as the bridge is more beautiful than ever, it’s time to pack it up :smiling_face_with_tear:. It kinda hurts but if I let it stay up now I’ll get too attached and it’ll get harder the longer I wait. The plan is to get back to my original layout, Neusvenstein. But one day the bridge is coming out again! And I’m going to swap a bit back and forth what layout is on display.

Making progress on the wind turbine stability. It used to be on par with a drunk toddler

The thing needs a foundation. Real wind turbines have massive foundation structures deep in the ground. I believe your desire, though is not to drill a hole in your cabinetry for such a thing, so consider an alternative: A broad plate of some fairly stout material, like sheet metal, through which you can drive screws up into the base of the turbine tower. You could also print several broad appendages to the tower base that would spread the tip-over force (called a moment resistive structure) over a large area.

Or something. Love it.

The foundation sits on the sea floor. With a waterline model you can’t really do that. But with metal shavings and powder in the base I’ve gotten it more than enough stable for my use cases.

I just worked through this with a tower I designed for a client - it was in a hurricane zone and needed to be engineered for some very high wind loads, and it being an open observational tower, and in a public park the requirements were pretty brutal.

We had to do the same thing - because it sat on a tiny man made knoll we couldn’t spread out the foundation - so it is essentially an insanely thick and heavy base (that will get buried in the landscaping).

Curious how thick the cabinet top is - I wonder if you could use a powerful rare earth magnet in the base and simply place one under it beneath the tower… might be too much material between the two, but maybe a test would tell.

drill the cabinet top.
glue in the magnet.
cover the magnet with a super thin coat of resin or whatever. paint white. sand / polish.

(ok, if you really want to keep it neat, drill from below and stop before you go through.)

My guess is the cabinet top is somewhere around 13-15mm? @bmike has a good idea but a rare earth magnet powerful to grab Julia’s turbine base is gonna be pretty large. I suppose she could put another magnet in the base instead of metal filings . . . @ateliernab has a good solution except it forces Julia to put the turbine in just one location (unless she’s willing to make her cabinet top into Swiss cheese.

Julia: have you turned on the motor to see how much the fan’s blades deflect the tower?
