I’m drawing plans for a wood gun case with egg-crate foam lining. I have the case designed, but I don’t know even how to start drawing egg crate foam. I have seen that the foam is 1-3/4" thick in total with the base being about 1/2" of that (maybe 5/8") with the peaks rising above that plane. I don’t have any real information about the dimensions of the peaks nor their spacing in the plane.
I wouldn’t draw this with real geometry because it’ll bring your computer to its knees. Use a gray color or maybe find a photograph of the foam to use as a texture instead.
What is your goal in modeling the lining? If it is just to give the general impression and outer dimensions for cutting, I’d do as @DaveR suggested and avoid modeling the actual hills and valleys.
If you must model the details, I’d use as low poly an approximation as possible, such as a simple pyramid, and soften/smooth the edges to make it look a bit more like the real thing.
I managed to make this from sine waves and Sandbox Tools. One orientation worked, and the other did not. Maybe another lofting tool could do a lower polygon count, I don’t know.
maybe also reducing the amount of sine waves would produce a coarser less detailed result. Considering the size of the end model, it would probably be fine in the end.
